Hadith No. 8 – Sahih al-Bukhari

Salam,

Bismillah.

‘Modesty is half faith’.

Ever came across this sentence? I’m sure you have!

Question: What is modesty? To be very shy and conservative? To restrict yourself from certain things?

Question: Why is modesty important? Why should I even try to practice it?

Today’s Hadith will tell us..

Volume 1, Book 2, Number 8:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya is a part of faith.”

Haya and Faith come in one package. Either you have them both, or you have none. And I think the importance of Faith is clear on everyone. =)

This term “Haya” covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.

It’s not only about our physical gestures, actions or reactions; it’s about our thoughts as well. See, our actions and reactions are noticeable, so we can alter them anytime, depending upon the situation and audience. For example, L is watching a movie. A PG-18 scene comes up and he continues to watch. Suddenly, when he hears his sister coming in, he switches the channel. Neat, right?

It’d be so easy to make a ‘modest’ impression of yourself among people. But it’s not just people whom we need to do Haya from. We’re supposed to do Haya from Allah as well.

This sentence struck me the most. Doing Haya from Allah. Really? How? And the answer is: by keeping our thoughts clean and being careful about the food that goes into our stomachs.

Crux of the matter is, that we need to do physical and mental Haya. Abstain from hearing/seeing the wrong stuff to stop yourself from thinking the wrong stuff.

This is my motivation/driving factor: ALLAH KNOWS!

Wassalam.

  1. Its interesting how if you don’t abstain from hearing / seeing the wrong stuff, you’ll end up thinking the wrong stuff… and it doesn’t stop there, you end up DOING the wrong stuff – and that is when a person does not have any haya left, of himself, of people, or of Allah. May Allah protect us. Jazakillah khair for posting this. I love your blog.

    wassalam

  2. True say. And thanks. :)
