I feel great going through Kitab-ul-Iman of Bukhari. Iman and spirits are high! Alhamdulillah. =)
The best part is that we only need to do small things to achieve the high levels of Iman. For example, yesterday it was about controlling your thoughts and actions. Today, it’s about… Well, let’s find out..
The Prophet (SAW) said, “A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue and hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one who gives up (abandons) all what Allah has forbidden.”
One word: self-control.
To not harm others from your tongue and hands, and to leave all that Allah has forbidden requires good amounts of self-control. Let’s say if someone behind you pinches you without a reason, what will you do? Pinch back, say a couple of harsh words, or ignore? Many will disagree with me if I say third one is the correct reaction. Because we CAN pinch back right? We’re ‘allowed’ to take revenge, equal in quantity and measure. But let me tell you this: self-control in this situation would require you to ignore WITH a smile. =)
Scenario: Someone brought you candies from abroad. Now you know that a few chocolates have ‘doubtful’ ingredients, especially when they’re made in non-Muslim countries. Whey is an example. Would you eat the chocolate that you love so much, knowing it has a ‘haraam’ ingredient? Or would you leave it for Allah, practicing self-control?
The problem lies here: not many people know how to practice self-control. They just can’t evaluate before acting/reacting the wrong way. So I’ll give you a little tip that I use myself. In order to check the amount of self-control you have, try holding yourself back from the thing you WANT the most.
Scenario: Food is on the table. “Mmmm! I’ll eat this, and this and that too…” WAIT! You ‘want’ to eat food. This is the time you can check yourself. Are you able to hold yourself back from that one dish that you love?
This will definitely give you results, inshaAllah!
I’ll give you a little more motivation. A personal experience on self-control: I haven’t eaten chicken since almost 6 months. ;)
Another really good way to improve self-control is: fasting. In Ramadaan and otherwise. =)
