Kitaab-ul-‘Ilm [Book of Knowledge] (Hadith No. 56)

Salam,
Bismillah.

Acquiring knowledge is of the utmost importance for a Muslim. Allah mentions its excellence in the Qur’an:

..Allah will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge. And Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do. [Al-Mujadilah: 11]

Notice that belief and knowledge are brought together in this verse. Having belief + knowledge will raise you in ranks, inshaAllah.

Today’s Hadith is related to a very important aspect in attaining knowledge: questioning. Note what happens..

Volume 1, Book 3, Number 56:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

While the Prophet was saying something in a gathering, a Bedouin came and asked him, “When would the Hour (Doomsday) take place?” Allah’s Apostle continued his talk, so some people said that Allah’s Apostle had heard the question, but did not like what that Bedouin had asked. Some of them said that Alllah’s Apostle had not heard it. When the Prophet finished his speech, he said, “Where is the questioner, who enquired about the Hour (Doomsday)?” The Bedouin said, “I am here, O Allah’s Apostle .” Then the Prophet said, “When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour (Doomsday).” The Bedouin said, “How will that be lost?” The Prophet said, “When the power or authority comes in the hands of unfit persons, then wait for the Hour (Doomsday.)”

See how the Prophet (SAW) ignored the Bedouin’s question while he was in the middle of a conversation? This is the very first etiquette we need to bring to practice as learners.

If you’re the teacher, ignore interruptions during your talk. Entertain questions afterwards.

If you’re a student, avoid interrupting a teacher when they’re already talking. Only ask when they’re quiet. And if you get ignored by the teacher, don’t mind. :)

Ask Allah for increase in knowledge:

رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا

..My Lord! Increase me in knowledge. [Taha: 114]

Wassalam.
