The Unnecessary Shyness (Hadith No. 58)

Salam,
Bismillah.

You know the feeling when we know the answer to something but we don’t tell? The feeling’s called shyness. Unnecessary shyness, to be more precise..
It’s more common in kids, as it’s always been. Abdullah bin ‘Umar here was also a kid. Check out what happened with him..

Volume 1, Book 3, Number 58:

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:

Allah’s Apostle said, “Amongst the trees, there is a tree, the leaves of which do not fall and is like a Muslim. Tell me the name of that tree.” Everybody started thinking about the trees of the desert areas. And I thought of the date-palm tree but felt shy to answer. The others then asked, “What is that tree, O Allah’s Apostle ?” He replied, “It is the date-palm tree.”

The reason he tells for not answering the Prophet (SAW) is that he didn’t think it right to speak up in the presence of elders –> unnecessary shyness.
His father, ‘Umar (RA) also told him that he should have spoken up. And that he would’ve liked it very much.

Anyway, taking a lesson, being a student, remember: NEVER be shy while learning. If you have a question, go for it. If you know the answer, speak up!

Wassalam.

  1. I loved this hadith. We should most definitely learn a lesson from this one. *wink wink*

  2. Hahaha today I knew the answer to a question in Arabic class but didn’t speak up… I love how our deen teaches us to be confident, well-rounded students.

    Great reminder!

  3. Hmmm……..nice one Yumzz ;P

  4. Beautiful. Reminds me of the statement

العلم يضيع بين الحياء و الكبر

Knowledge gets wasted between shyness and arrogance. You have to get rid of these two in order to learn.

    Keep posting! :)
