Tayammum Procedure (Hadith No. 335)

Bismillah.

Volume 1, Book 7, Number 335:

Narrated Said bin ‘Abdur Rahman bin Abza:

(on the authority of his father who said) ‘Ammar said so (the above Statement). And Shu’ba stroked lightly the earth with his hands and brought them close to his mouth (blew off the dust) and passed them over his face and then the backs of his hands. ‘Ammar said, “Ablution (meaning Tayammum here) is sufficient for a Muslim if water is not available.”

There are precisely three steps in tayammum:

1. Stroke the earth* lightly with hands.
2. Bring the hands close to mouth, blow off the dust.
3. Pass the hands over the face and then the backhands.

*You need dust. The source can be earth/a wall/window sill/any surface which has dust over it. Make sure it’s clean otherwise i.e it’s not the floor of a bathroom.
