Pictures (Hadith No. 371)

Volume 1, Book 8, Number 371:

Narrated Anas:

‘Aisha had a Qiram (a thin marked woolen curtain) with which she had screened one side of her home. The Prophet said, “Take away this Qiram of yours, as its pictures are still displayed in front of me during my prayer (i.e. they divert my attention from the prayer).”

Simply put, that curtain had pictures on it (of birds/animals). Prophet (SAW) asked Aisha (RA) to take it off the wall because it distracted him from the prayer.
The ruling about not putting up pictures on the walls is also derived from this.
