A Note (Ahadith 1463 – 1464)

Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 763:

Narrated ‘Ikrima:

Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) saw a man driving a Badana (sacrificial camel). The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said (to him), ‘Ride on it.’ He replied, ‘It is a Badana.’ The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) again said, ‘Ride on it!’ Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu) added, ‘Then I saw that man riding it, showing obedience to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam), and a shoe was (hanging) from its neck.’ “

Volume 2, Book 26, Number 764:

Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):

From the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam): (as above).

This Hadith has been covered before as well, very recently. But this narration (no. 1463) has an addition to it, if you notice. This last bit:

Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu) added, ‘Then I saw that man riding it, showing obedience to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam), and a shoe was (hanging) from its neck.’

Now, when I read the Hadith without this addition, to be honest, I ‘judged’ this person (who was driving the animal). I thought to myself, what got into him? Why didn’t he obey the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) the first time he had asked him to ride on it? Why did the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) have to repeat the command three times? And if it wasn’t for Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu), we wouldn’t have known if he obeyed the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) in the end or not.

Analyzing this man’s behavior in this particular incident, I realized that he was merely presenting his logic. Maybe he was assuming that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) didn’t know it was a badana (sacrificial animal) and that’s why he was asking him to ride on it. Maybe, according to him or the traditions of that time, it was wrong to ride on sacrificial animals because they were ‘sacred’. But the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did know and he repeated his command: “Ride on it!” Yet he was unconvinced and repeated that it was a badana! (How could he ride on it?!) Maybe it was unthinkable for him what the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was suggesting and that’s why the command didn’t sink in that easy.
After repeating the command three times, Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) just said: “Woe to you!” What else could he do? :S

And then Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu) adds to the narration, saying he saw that man riding the animal later, obeying the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam). Alhamdulillah for that. I don’t know about you, but I feel better after knowing this bit. This piece of information saved me from having bad thoughts about that man (my brother in Islam). And SubhanAllah, I could never have come up with 70 excuses for him! May Allah forgive me.

  1. . “Maybe, according to him or the traditions of that time, it was wrong to ride on sacrificial animals because they were ‘sacred’”” yeah that was the reason, majority of the scholars said that riding on sacrificial animals is makrooh except for zaroorah.
