Spilling (Hadith No. 2141)
Bismillah.
Volume 3, Book 43, Number 644:
Narrated Anas (radiallaahu `anhu):
I was the butler of the people in the house of Abu Talha (radiallaahu `anhu), and in those days drinks were prepared from dates. Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) ordered somebody to announce that alcoholic drinks had been prohibited. Abu Talha (radiallaahu `anhu) ordered me to go out and spill the wine. I went out and spilled it, and it flowed in the streets of Medina. Some people said, “Some people were killed and wine was still in their stomachs.” On that the Divine revelation came:- “On those who believe And do good deeds, there is no blame for what they ate (in the past).” (5.93)

This hadith is mentioned by Imam Bukhari in this Book (of Oppressions) under the chapter “Spilling Wine on the Way”. Under normal circumstances, throwing something out on the street or in the way will be considered absolutely immoral.. but in this case, not one, but all the companions threw out whatever they had of intoxicating drinks as soon as the verse was revealed.
That was then. In this day and age, with sewers and drainage systems intact in our houses and buildings, we need not resort to the spilling method. You wanna get rid of something? Try the garbage can, or send it down the drain. DO NOT SPILL! Especially where people could walk and get hurt/dirty.
