Looking This Way Or That.. (Hadith No. 157)
Salam,
Bismillah.
Hadith no 156 is a repeat. Read it here.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I followed the Prophet while he was going out to answer the call of nature. He used not to look this way or that. So, when I approached near him he said to me, “Fetch for me some stones for cleaning the privates parts (or said something similar), and do not bring a bone or a piece of dung.” So I brought the stones in the corner of my garment and placed them by his side and I then went away from him. When he finished (from answering the call of nature), he used them.
Notice Abu Huraira (RA) saying: “He used not to look this way or that.” This is the aspect of the Hadith we’re discussing today.
Prophet (SAW) never looked here and there while walking. If he wanted to turn, he’d turn completely rather than just turning his neck. It shows his focus on his target. And etiquettes require us to turn completely towards the person we’re talking to. Merely tilting your neck is a sign of arrogance.
What to do now? Check yourself while walking. Do you have a goal in front of you or are you just wasting your time looking here and there? Secondly, when you’re talking to someone, do you turn towards them completely or just tilt your neck?
Wassalam.
