Question to Teach (Hadith No. 59)
Salam,
Bismillah.
This Hadith is a repeat, but I’m posting it again to highlight another point: question to teach.
Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:
The Prophet said, “Amongst the trees, there is a tree, the leaves of which do not fall and is like a Muslim. Tell me the name of that tree.” Everybody started thinking about the trees of the desert areas. And I thought of the date-palm tree. The others then asked, “Please inform us what is that tree, O Allah’s Apostle?” He replied, “It is the date-palm tree.”
Did you notice the Prophet (SAW)’s way of teaching his companions? He asked a question. A kind of a riddle. It challenged their intellect and provoked thinking.
Questioning has benefits as well. The learning is life-long. Abdullah bin ‘Umar related this incident years after it actually happened. It means he remembered it.
So, whatever and whomever you teach, make sure your teaching style has this element in it. You’ll definitely see remarkable changes. :)
Do go through this presentation for more on the benefits of questioning and effective teacher questioning.
Wassalam.
