Volume 3, Book 41, Number 591 :
Narrated by Al-Mughira bin Shu’ba (radiallaahu `anhu)
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Allah has forbidden for you, (1) to be undutiful to your mothers, (2) to bury your daughters alive, (3) to not to pay the rights of the others (e.g. charity, etc.) and (4) to beg of men (begging). And Allah has hated for you (1) vain, useless talk, or that you talk too much about others, (2) to ask too many questions, (in disputed religious matters) and (3) to waste the wealth (by extravagance).
The Difference between “Forbidden” (Haraam) and “Hated/Disliked” (Makrooh):
Makrooh in Arabic means the opposite of liked or loved.
In the terminology of sharee’ah it means that which the Lawgiver asks us not to do, but not in a definitive manner. It may be said that it means that for which the person who does not do it out of obedience will be rewarded, but the one who does it will not be punished.
Haraam in Arabic means forbidden.
In the terminology of sharee’ah it means, that which the Lawgiver requires us not to do, in a definitive manner. Haraam is the opposite of halaal (permitted). A person will be rewarded for not doing that which is haraam, if he does so out of obedience, and not out of fear, shyness or the inability to do it; in those cases he will not be rewarded for not doing it.
Keeping all this in mind, we’re all in big trouble when it comes to being dutiful to our mothers! May Allah make us more obedient, respectful and loving towards our parents.

Volume 3, Book 40, Number 560 :
Narrated by Zaid bin Khalid (radiallaahu `anhu)
A man came to Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and asked about Al-Luqata (a fallen thing). The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Recognize its container and its tying material and then make a public announcement about it for one year and if its owner shows up, give it to him; otherwise use it as you like.” The man said, “What about a lost sheep?” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “It is for you, your brother or the wolf.” The man said “What about a lost camel?” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Why should you take it as it has got its water-container (its stomach) and its hooves and it can reach the places of water and can eat the trees till its owner finds it?”

Volume 3, Book 40, Number 561 :
Narrated by Az-Zubair bin Al ‘Awwam (radiallaahu `anhu)
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “No doubt, one had better take a rope (and cut) and tie a bundle of wood and sell it whereby Allah will keep his face away (from Hell-fire) rather than ask others who may give him or not.”
Volume 3, Book 40, Number 562 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu)
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “No doubt, you had better gather a bundle of wood and carry it on your back (and earn your living thereby) rather than ask somebody who may give you or not.”
Volume 3, Book 40, Number 563 :
Narrated by Husain bin Ali (radiallaahu `anhu)
Ali bin Abi Talib (radiallaahu `anhu) said: “I got a she-camel as my share of the war booty on the day (of the battle) of Badr, and Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) gave me another she-camel. I let both of them kneel at the door of one of the Ansar, intending to carry Idhkhir on them to sell it and use its price for my wedding banquet on marrying Fatima (radiallaahu `anhaa). A goldsmith from Bam Qainqa’ was with me. Hamza bin ‘Abdul-Muttalib (radiallaahu `anhu) was in that house drinking wine and a lady singer was reciting: “O Hamza! (Kill) the (two) fat old she camels (and serve them to your guests).” So Hamza (radiallaahu `anhu) took his sword and went towards the two she-camels and cut off their humps and opened their flanks and took a part of their livers.” (I said to Ibn Shihab, “Did he take part of the humps?” He replied, “He cut off their humps and carried them away.”) ‘Ali (radiallaahu `anhu) further said, “When I saw that dreadful sight, I went to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and told him the news. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) came out in the company of Zaid bin Haritha (radiallaahu `anhu) who was with him then, and I too went with them. He went to Hamza (radiallaahu `anhu) and spoke harshly to him. Hamza looked up and said, ‘Aren’t you only the slaves of my forefathers?’ The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) retreated and went out. This incident happened before the prohibition of drinking.”
This Hadith shows:
- we should help out our relatives and friends in need – Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) gave an extra camel to Ali (radiallaahu `anhu) so he could make some money for the wedding banquet.
- the dangers and disadvantages of alcohol consumption – the person loses control of his mind and tongue etc. How do you expect him/her to behave in a respectful manner? And this is one of the reasons it’s unlawful to drink alcohol in Islam. Read more on it here.
Volume 3, Book 34, Number 426 :
Narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu)
Once ‘Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) informed that a certain man sold alcohol. ‘Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “May Allah curse him! Doesn’t he know that Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, ‘May Allah curse the Jews, for Allah had forbidden them to eat the fat of animals but they melted it and sold it.”
Volume 3, Book 34, Number 427 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu)
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “May Allah curse the Jews, because Allah made fat illegal for them but they sold it and ate its price. “
We studied previously that when Allah forbids a thing, He forbids its price. Animal fat was haraam for the Jews. To have a way around it, they used to sell it to others and consume its price. This is wrong because of the rule mentioned in the beginning. Similarly, alcohol is forbidden for Muslims and so is its price. We can’t drink it OR sell it to non-Muslims. Its price is forbidden too.

Volume 3, Book 34, Number 298:
Narrated Samura bin Jundab (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “This night I dreamt that two men came and took me to a Holy land whence we proceeded on till we reached a river of blood, where a man was standing, and on its bank was standing another man with stones in his hands. The man in the middle of the river tried to come out, but the other threw a stone in his mouth and forced him to go back to his original place. So, whenever he tried to come out, the other man would throw a stone in his mouth and force him to go back to his former place. I asked, ‘Who is this?’ I was told, ‘The person in the river was a Riba-eater.”
The Forbidden Four
Volume 3, Book 34, Number 299:
Narrated ‘Aun bin Abu Juhaifa:
My father bought a slave who practiced the profession of cupping. (My father broke the slave’s instruments of cupping). I asked my father why he had done so. He replied, “The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) forbade the acceptance of the price of a dog or blood, and also forbade the profession of tattooing, getting tattooed and receiving or giving Riba, (usury), and cursed the picture-makers.”
- A detailed study on the ahadith about cupping show that doing it and charging money for it is not exactly haraam.
- The prohibition on the price of a dog and the fact that it is among the most evil of earnings and is something vile indicates that it is haraam to sell dogs; the transaction is not valid and the price is not halaal and the one who destroys it is not obliged to repay its value, regardless of whether the dog is trained or not, or whether it is one that it is permissible to keep or not. This is the view of the majority of scholars.
- Tattooing, in which the skin is pierced with a needle and a blue or other coloured dye is injected, is haraam in all forms, whether it causes pain or not, because it involves changing the creation of Allaah, and because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed the one who does tattoos and the one for whom that is done.
- Riba (which means adding something extra to certain products, like selling gold for gold, or by not receiving something when a contract is signed, or paying extra in return for extension of a loan) is haraam because Allaah – who rules as He wills – has forbidden it.
- It is well established from clear, saheeh mutawaatir ahaadeeth that image-making is not allowed, and that the one who does this is cursed and is warned of torment in Hell, as in the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbaas which is attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Every image maker will be in Hell, and a soul will be given to every image which he made so that it might torment him in Hell.” (Narrated by Muslim).
