When The Earth Starts To Shake…

In light of the frequently occurring earthquakes these days… Most of these signs can be found in various Hadiths of the Prophet (SallAllaahu Alaiyhi Wasallam). I tried to find the ones I could. See the links in sha Allah.

As we reach close to the end of times

The earth gets filled with sins and crimes

When Humans worse than animals behave

When a child treats his own mother as a slave (1)

When false prophets start to increase in number (2)

When you wake people up but they prefer to slumber

When the most loved person is a liar and deceiver

When the most hated person is a faithful believer

When even Muslims start believing in false prophecies

When no one is afraid of committing hypocrisy

When killing someone becomes a piece of cake

When while taking a life, a person’s hands don’t even shake (3)

When children of fornication are born everyday

When people stop caring if someone goes astray

When all of this gets too much to take

Then that is when the earth frequently starts to shake… (4)

Another Trait of Hypocrisy (Hadith No. 1195)

Bismillah.

Volume 2, Book 24, Number 496:

Narrated Abu Masud:

When the verses of charity were revealed, we used to work as porters. A man came and distributed objects of charity in abundance. And they (the people) said, “He is showing off.” And another man came and gave a sa’ (a small measure of food grains); they said, “Allah is not in need of this small amount of charity.” And then the Divine Inspiration came: “Those who criticize such of the believers who give in charity voluntarily and those who could not find to give in charity except what is available to them.” (9.79).

From Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

Among the traits of the hypocrites is that they will not leave anyone without defaming and ridiculing him in all circumstances even those who give away charity. If, for instance, someone gives away a large amount, the hypocrites say that he is showing off. If someone gives away a small amount they say that Allah stands not in need of this man’s charity. Al-Bukhari recorded that `Ubaydullah bin Sa`id said that Abu An-Nu`man Al-Basri said that Shu`bah narrated that Sulayman said that Abu Wa’il said that Abu Mas`ud said, “When the verses of charity were revealed, we used to work as porters. A man came and distributed objects of charity in abundance and they (hypocrites) said, `He is showing off.’ Another man came and gave a Sa` (a small measure of food grains); they said, `Allah is not in need of this small amount of charity.’ Then the Ayah was revealed;

﴿الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ﴾

(Those who defame the volunteers…)” Muslim collected this Hadith in the Sahih. Al-`Awfi narrated that Ibn `Abbas said, “One day, the Messenger of Allah went out to the people and called them to bring forth their charity, and they started bringing their charity. Among the last to come forth was a man who brought a Sa` of dates, saying, `O Allah’s Messenger! This is a Sa` of dates. I spent the night bringing water and earned two Sa` of dates for my work. I kept one Sa` and brought you the other Sa`. ‘ The Messenger of Allah ordered him to add it to the charity. Some men mocked that man, saying, `Allah and His Messenger are not in need of this charity. What benefit would this Sa` of yours bring’ `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf asked Allah’s Messenger , `Are there any more people who give charity’ The Messenger of Allah said,

«لَمْ يَبْقَ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُك»

(None besides you!) `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf said, `I will give a hundred Uqiyah of gold as a charity.’ `Umar bin Al-Khattab said to him, `Are you crazy’ `Abdur-Rahman said, `I am not crazy.’ `Umar said, `Have you given what you said would give’ `Abdur-Rahman said, `Yes. I have eight thousand (Dirhams), four thousand I give as a loan to my Lord and four thousand I keep for myself.’ The Messenger of Allah said,

«بَارَكَ اللهُ لَكَ فِيمَا أَمْسَكْتَ وَفِيمَا أَعْطَيْت»

(May Allah bless you for what you kept and what you gave away). However, the hypocrites defamed him, `By Allah! `Abdur-Rahman gave what he gave just to show off.’ They lied, for `Abdur-Rahman willingly gave that money, and Allah revealed about his innocence and the innocence of the fellow who was poor and brought only a Sa` of dates. Allah said in His Book,

﴿الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَـتِ﴾

(Those who defame such of the believers who give charity voluntarily) ﴿9:79﴾.”’ A similar story was narrated from Mujahid and several others. Ibn Ishaq said, “Among the believers who gave away charity were `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf who gave four thousand Dirhams and `Asim bin `Adi from Bani `Ajlan. This occurred after the Messenger of Allah encouraged and called for paying charity. `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf stood and gave away four thousand Dirhams. `Asim bin `Adi also stood and gave a hundred Wasaq of dates, but some people defamed them, saying, `They are showing off.’ As for the person who gave the little that he could afford, he was Abu `Aqil, from Bani Anif Al-Arashi, who was an ally of Bani `Amr bin `Awf. He brought a Sa` of dates and added it to the charity. They laughed at him, saying, `Allah does not need the Sa` of Abu `Aqil.”’ Allah said,

﴿فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ سَخِرَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ﴾

(so they mock at them (believers); Allah will throw back their mockery on them) rebuking them for their evil actions and defaming the believers. Truly, the reward, or punishment, is equitable to the action. Allah treated them the way mocked people are treated, to aid the believers in this life. Allah has prepared a painful torment in the Hereafter for the hypocrites, for the recompense is similar to the deed.

Do you see the kind of behavior hypocrites had shown? Belittling, defaming and ridiculing others as if they knew what was in their hearts. As if they knew their intentions to be insincere.
It’s a HUGE thing to judge someone. It is so disliked by Allah that He revealed verses in the Qur’an for it, protecting the honor of the Sahaba who has spent in His way. He dislikes this trait of hypocrisy so much that he forbade Prophet (SAW) from asking forgiveness for the hypocrites, right in the next verse:

(80. Whether you (O Muhammad ) ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask not forgiveness for them — (and even) if you ask seventy times for their forgiveness — Allah will not forgive them because they have disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger. And Allah guides not those people who are rebellious.)

Bottom line: don’t judge people. Don’t try to defame anyone. Especially the believers. You don’t know how beloved that person is to Allah. And if you hurt them, Allah might protect them.

Note: if you think you have this trait, try to fix it. Think good about people. Make 70 excuses for them before thinking bad about them. “Maybe he didn’t mean to..”, “Maybe he didn’t know..” etc. Reflect on your own faults and flaws before looking at others’.
And if you think someone you know has this problem. Stop right there! You’re being judgmental again. :P

Death of a Hypocrite (Ahadith 1058 -1059)

Bismillah.

I want you to recall who Abdullah ibn Ubayy was. I want you to read up on him a bit. Here’s a few words about him:

Abdullah bin Ubayy was an Ansar chief of Madina. Abdullah bin Ubayy had the ambition to wear the crown of Madina. When the people of Madina invited the Holy Prophet and the Muslims to migrate to Madina and accepted the Holy Prophet as their ruler the designs of Abdullah bin Ubayy were frustrated. As all the Arabs of Madina accepted Islam, Abdullah also became a Muslim as a measure of expediency. Islam, however, sat lightly on him, and he often indulged in activities hostile to Islam.

In the battle of Uhud, he betrayed the Muslim trust and withdrew his contingent at the last moment. On the occasion of the raid of Al-Mustaliq he said unbecoming things against the Muhajreen including the Holy Prophet. In the sad episode of False Allegation he was responsible for calumny against Ayesha. Umar sought the permission of the Holy Prophet to kill Abdullah bin Ubayy, but the Holy Prophet, kind-hearted as he was, did not give the permission.

Even Allah had taken notice of the hypocrisy of Abdullah bin Ubayy, and in a revelation to the Holy Prophet it was said that even if he prayed for the hypocrites seventy times his prayer would not be accepted.

Volume 2, Book 23, Number 359:

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:

When ‘Abdullah bin Ubai (the chief of hypocrites) died, his son came to the Prophet and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Please give me your shirt to shroud him in it, offer his funeral prayer and ask for Allah’s forgiveness for him.” So Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) gave his shirt to him and said, “Inform me (When the funeral is ready) so that I may offer the funeral prayer.” So, he informed him and when the Prophet intended to offer the funeral prayer, ‘Umar took hold of his hand and said, “Has Allah not forbidden you to offer the funeral prayer for the hypocrites? The Prophet said, “I have been given the choice for Allah says: ‘(It does not avail) Whether you (O Muhammad) ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites), or do not ask for forgiveness for them. Even though you ask for their forgiveness seventy times, Allah will not forgive them. (9.80)” So the Prophet offered the funeral prayer and on that the revelation came: “And never (O Muhammad) pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (i.e. hypocrites) that dies.” (9. 84)

Volume 2, Book 23, Number 360:

Narrated Jabir:

The Prophet came to (the grave of) ‘Abdullah bin Ubai after his body was buried. The body was brought out and then the Prophet put his saliva over the body and clothed it in his shirt.

An interesting commentary on this Hadith here.

There were many reasons behind the Prophet’s leading the janazah prayer of a man who worked hard to divide the Islamic community throughout his life.

The most important reason was to make people who had gathered around him have belief. As a matter of fact, when the Messenger of God was asked why he gave his shirt and why he led the janazah prayer of Abdullah b. Ubay b. Salul, he gave the following answer:

“My shirt and the janazah prayer I performed will not save him from the torture of my Lord. However, I hope that one thousand people from his tribe will become sincere Muslims thanks to them.”

Indeed, one thousand people became Muslims when they saw that the Messenger of God treated Abdullah b. Ubay so graciously.

Read more on his death and the way Prophet (SAW) treated him here.

And for you and me, here’s the lesson we must learn from this story:

Won’t you agree?

Wassalam.

Step-up!

This is the first collaborative work we’ve done, and it turned out to be quite good Alhamdulillah. Tell us what you think about it :) The first two stanzas are mine, addressing the brothers; the last two were written by Sister Mariam, addressing the sisters.

I know what you do when you hang out after school;

Showing off with your friends thinking you’re so cool;

“Check out that girl”, to your friend you say;

Making sure your sister always in hijab does stay!

This hypocrisy, I can’t really seem to comprehend;

At someone’s sister you stare, while your own you defend?!

O Muslim! You’re astounding; you continue to amaze!

Pretending you don’t know we’re supposed to lower our gaze?!

But to me, my friend, you’re just a fool!

You don’t control yourself; your desires rule!

Your Nafs for Shaytaan is an excellent tool!

Your body is satisfied, but your soul does pule;

Cuz if you only knew what’s really cool…

Beauty; the likes of which you’ve never seen;

Untouched by the Jinn or any human being;

Reclining on cushions of silver and gold;

A sight so beautiful, it would make you drool;

Respectful, joyful, youthful and beautiful;

The promise of the truthful; most gracious and Merciful;

There is still time, if you be a bit mindful;

Heedful, watchful, thoughtful and careful.

The ultimate goal if you wish to achieve;

You better start acting on what you believe;

If you truly want Jannah as your final abode;

Make Siraat-ul-Mustaqeem your only road!

Sisters, the rest of this message is for you!

Protecting your chastity is your duty too!

Your beauty is sacred, not anybody’s tool;

Refuse to bow down to their rules!

Now is the time to wake up, step up;

Your beauty’s not limited to this superficial make-up;

This world you run after, it’s not gonna last;

Whatever you do, YOU need to act fast;

No, no, no, a man is NOT your goal;

No matter what he does, he can NEVER make your world whole!

By the One in Whose Hands is my soul,

Gaining HIS pleasure is your ONLY role!

Hadith No. 33 – Sahih al-Bukhari

Salam,

Bismillah.

Can hypocrisy and faith be in one heart simultaneously?

Volume 1, Book 2, Number 33:

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr:

The Prophet said, “Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up.

1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.

2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.

3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.

4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil and insulting manner.”

Note that the Prophet (SAW) said, whoever has one of these characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy until and unless he gives it up. Meaning that a believer MAY have either of these qualities but he should try to give it up since it’s hypocritical.

To clarify, read this:

Imam Ahmad recorded Abu Sa`id saying that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

(The hearts are four (types): polished as shiny as the radiating lamp, a sealed heart with a knot tied around its seal, a heart that is turned upside down and a wrapped heart. As for the polished heart, it is the heart of the believer and the lamp is the light of faith. The sealed heart is the heart of the disbeliever. The heart that is turned upside down is the heart of the pure hypocrite, because he had knowledge but denied it. As for the wrapped heart, it is a heart that contains belief and hypocrisy. The example of faith in this heart, is the example of the herb that is sustained by pure water. The example of hypocrisy in it, is the example of an ulcer that thrives on puss and blood. Whichever of the two substances has the upper hand, it will have the upper hand on that heart). This Hadith has a Jayid Hasan (good) chain of narration.

We’re humans. We do commit sins, knowingly and unknowingly. But to repent and to make amendments is what’s required of us. So, if you diagnose yourself with either of these hypocritical characteristics, GIVE IT UP! Because Imaan and Nifaq cannot get together in one heart for long. One will take over eventually.
