Volume 3, Book 48, Number 851 :
Narrated by An-Nu’man bin Bashir (radiallaahu `anhu)
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “The example of the person abiding by Allah’s orders and limits (or the one who abides by the limits and regulations prescribed by Allah) in comparison to the one who do wrong and violate Allah’s limits and orders is like the example of people drawing lots for seats in a boat. Some of them got seats in the upper part while the others in the lower part ; those in the, lower part have to pass by those in the upper one to get water, and that troubled the latter. One of them (i.e. the people in the lower part) took an axe and started making a hole in the bottom of the boat. The people of the upper part came and asked him, (saying), ‘What is wrong with you?’ He replied, “You have been troubled much by my (coming up to you), and I have to get water.’ Now if they prevent him from doing that they will save him and themselves, but if they leave him (to do what he wants), they will destroy him and themselves.”
Volume 3, Book 48, Number 852 :
Narrated by Um Al-Ala
That when the Ansar drew lots as to which of the emigrants should dwell with which of the Ansar, the name of Uthman bin Mazun (radiallaahu `anhu) came out (to be in their lot). Um Al-Ala further said, “Uthman stayed with us, and we nursed him when he got sick, but he died. We shrouded him in his clothes, and Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) came to our house and I said, (addressing the dead ‘Uthman), ‘O Abu As-Sa’ib! May Allah be merciful to you. I testify that Allah has blessed you.’ The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said to me, “How do you know that Allah has blessed him?” I replied, ‘I do not know O Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! May my parents be sacrificed for you.’ Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, ‘As regards Uthman, by Allah he has died and I really wish him every good, yet, by Allah, although I am Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam), I do not know what will be done to him.’ Um Al-Ala added, ‘By Allah I shall never attest the piety of anybody after him. And what Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said made me sad.” Um Al-Ala further said, “Once I slept and saw in a dream, a flowing stream for Uthman. So I went to Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and told him about it, he said, ‘That is (the symbol of) his deeds.”
Volume 3, Book 48, Number 853 :
Narrated by Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa)
Whenever Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) intended to go on a journey, he used to draw lots among his wives and would take with him the one on whom the lot fell. He also used to fix for everyone of his wives a day and a night, but Sauda bint Zam’a (radiallaahu `anhaa) gave her day and night to ‘Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa), the wife of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) intending thereby to please Allah’s Apostle. Volume 3, Book 48, Number 854 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu)
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “If the people knew what is the reward of making the call (for the prayer) and (of being in) the first row (in the prayer), and if they found no other way to get this privilege except by casting lots, they would certainly cast lots for it. If they knew the reward of the noon prayer, they would race for it, and if they knew the reward of the morning (i.e. Fajr) and Isha prayers, they would present themselves for the prayer even if they had to crawl to reach there.

Volume 3, Book 49, Number 855 :
Narrated by Sahl bin Sad (radiallaahu `anhu)
There was a dispute amongst the people of the tribe of Bani ‘Amr bin ‘Auf. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) went to them along with some of his companions in order to make peace between them. The time for the prayer became due but the Prophet did not turn up; Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu) pronounced the Adhan (i.e. call) for the prayer but the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) did not turn up, so Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu) went to Abu Bakr (radiallaahu `anhu) and said, “The time for the prayer is due and the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) is detained, would you lead the people in the prayer?” Abu Bakr (radiallaahu `anhu) replied, “Yes, if you wish.” So, Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu) pronounced the Iqama of the prayer and Abu Bakr (radiallaahu `anhu) went ahead (to lead the prayer), but the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) came walking among the rows till he joined the first row. The people started clapping and they clapped too much, and Abu Bakr (radiallaahu `anhu) used not to look hither and thither in the prayer, but he turned round and saw the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) standing behind him. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) beckoned him with his hand to keep on praying where he was. Abu Bakr (radiallaahu `anhu) raised his hand and praised Allah and then retreated till he came in the (first) row, and the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) went ahead and lead the people in the prayer. When the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) finished the prayer, he turned towards the people and said, “O people! When something happens to you during the prayer, you start clapping. Really, clapping is (permissible) for women only. If something happens to one of you in his prayer, he should say: ‘Subhan Allah’, (Glorified be Allah), for whoever hears him (saying so) will direct his attention towards him. O Abu Bakr! What prevented you from leading the people in the prayer when I beckoned to you (to continue)?” Abu Bakr (radiallaahu `anhu) replied, “It did not befit the son of Abu Quhafa to lead the prayer in front of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam).
Volume 3, Book 49, Number 856 :
Narrated by Anas (radiallaahu `anhu)
It was said to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) “Would that you see Abdullah bin Ubai.” So, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) went to him, riding a donkey, and the Muslims accompanied him, walking on salty barren land. When the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) reached ‘Abdullah bin Ubai, the latter said, “Keep away from me! By Allah, the bad smell of your donkey has harmed me.” On that an Ansari man said (to ‘Abdullah), “By Allah! The smell of the donkey of Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) is better than your smell.” On that a man from ‘Abdullah’s tribe got angry for ‘Abdullah’s sake, and the two men abused each other which caused the friends of the two men to get angry, and the two groups started fighting with sticks, shoes and hands. We were informed that the following Divine Verse was revealed (in this concern):– “And if two groups of Believers fall to fighting then, make peace between them.” (49.9)
There is an apparent problem with this hadith that the scholars have reconciled in different ways.
Problem: this ayah was not revealed after this incident because it took place in the very beginning in Madinah, and Surah al-Hujuraat was revealed in the later stages. Furthermore, the people of Abdullah ibn Ubayy were not Muslims yet and that is why the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) went to them – to give da’wah, and the ayah talks about “two Muslim groups”.
- Anas (radiallaahu `anhu) gives this ayah as evidence instead of stating the reason for its revelation. Read its tafsir for details.
- There were some Muslims among Ibn Ubayy’s people and Allah was referring to them in this ayah, because his hypocrisy wasn’t exposed yet.
- Anas (radiallaahu `anhu) uses the word “ballaghanaa” (بلغنا) while narrating this hadith which means “it reached us”.. so it’s unclear whom it came from and how sound the report was.
Whichever one it is, Allah knows best. But it’s definitely intriguing!
P.S. what a disrespectful way to talk to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam): “Keep away from me! By Allah, the bad smell of your donkey has harmed me.” -_-
Volume 3, Book 30, Number 107:
Narrated Jabir (radiallaahu `anhu):
A bedouin came to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and gave a pledge of allegiance for embracing Islam. The next day he came with fever and said (to the Prophet ), “Please cancel my pledge.” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) refused (that request) three times and said, “Medina is like a furnace, it expels out the impurities (bad persons) and selects the good ones and makes them perfect.”
There are two opinions among the scholars concerning this, that the Bedouin wanting to cancel the pledge meant that:
- he wanted to revert back to paganism and leave Islam
- he wanted to leave the city Madinah
The second one seems more correct because if he were to renounce Islam, Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) would’ve prescribed a punishment for him according to the Shari`ah, but he didn’t. He said these words to him because the Bedouin wanted to leave the city due to his dislike for it. A good Muslim has to love Madinah and there are no two ways about it.
So if someone gets the opportunity to live in Madinah and he lives there despite its hardships and trials even though he’d be better off somewhere else, then the glad tiding in the above hadith “..selects the good ones and makes them perfect” is for him. And if someone leaves it due to his dislike for it, then the wa`eed “..expels out the impurities” is for him.
Volume 3, Book 30, Number 108:
Narrated Zaid bin Thabit (radiallaahu `anhu):
When the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) went out for (the battle of) Uhud, some of his companions (hypocrites) returned (home). A party of the believers remarked that they would kill those (hypocrites) who had returned, but another party said that they would not kill them. So, this Divine Inspiration was revealed: “Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties concerning the hypocrites.” (4.88) The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Medina expels the bad persons from it, as fire expels the impurities of iron.”
Some scholars have said that this virtue of Madinah was specific to the time of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) because trials and revelation used to distinguish between the believers and the hypocrites clearly. After the time of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam), all kinds of people started living in Madinah.
Near the end of times, this virtue will become strong and active again because Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said:
“Verily, Belief returns and goes back to Medina as a snake returns and goes back to its hole (when in danger).”
I want you to recall who Abdullah ibn Ubayy was. I want you to read up on him a bit. Here’s a few words about him:
Abdullah bin Ubayy was an Ansar chief of Madina. Abdullah bin Ubayy had the ambition to wear the crown of Madina. When the people of Madina invited the Holy Prophet and the Muslims to migrate to Madina and accepted the Holy Prophet as their ruler the designs of Abdullah bin Ubayy were frustrated. As all the Arabs of Madina accepted Islam, Abdullah also became a Muslim as a measure of expediency. Islam, however, sat lightly on him, and he often indulged in activities hostile to Islam.
In the battle of Uhud, he betrayed the Muslim trust and withdrew his contingent at the last moment. On the occasion of the raid of Al-Mustaliq he said unbecoming things against the Muhajreen including the Holy Prophet. In the sad episode of False Allegation he was responsible for calumny against Ayesha. Umar sought the permission of the Holy Prophet to kill Abdullah bin Ubayy, but the Holy Prophet, kind-hearted as he was, did not give the permission.
Even Allah had taken notice of the hypocrisy of Abdullah bin Ubayy, and in a revelation to the Holy Prophet it was said that even if he prayed for the hypocrites seventy times his prayer would not be accepted.
Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:
When ‘Abdullah bin Ubai (the chief of hypocrites) died, his son came to the Prophet and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Please give me your shirt to shroud him in it, offer his funeral prayer and ask for Allah’s forgiveness for him.” So Allah’s Apostle (p.b.u.h) gave his shirt to him and said, “Inform me (When the funeral is ready) so that I may offer the funeral prayer.” So, he informed him and when the Prophet intended to offer the funeral prayer, ‘Umar took hold of his hand and said, “Has Allah not forbidden you to offer the funeral prayer for the hypocrites? The Prophet said, “I have been given the choice for Allah says: ‘(It does not avail) Whether you (O Muhammad) ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites), or do not ask for forgiveness for them. Even though you ask for their forgiveness seventy times, Allah will not forgive them. (9.80)” So the Prophet offered the funeral prayer and on that the revelation came: “And never (O Muhammad) pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (i.e. hypocrites) that dies.” (9. 84)
The Prophet came to (the grave of) ‘Abdullah bin Ubai after his body was buried. The body was brought out and then the Prophet put his saliva over the body and clothed it in his shirt.

There were many reasons behind the Prophet’s leading the janazah prayer of a man who worked hard to divide the Islamic community throughout his life.
The most important reason was to make people who had gathered around him have belief. As a matter of fact, when the Messenger of God was asked why he gave his shirt and why he led the janazah prayer of Abdullah b. Ubay b. Salul, he gave the following answer:
“My shirt and the janazah prayer I performed will not save him from the torture of my Lord. However, I hope that one thousand people from his tribe will become sincere Muslims thanks to them.”
Indeed, one thousand people became Muslims when they saw that the Messenger of God treated Abdullah b. Ubay so graciously.

And for you and me, here’s the lesson we must learn from this story:
Which prayers do you find the HARDEST? Fajr? When you have to give up your comfy bed for Allah’s sake.. Or ‘Isha? When all you’re thinking about is your cozy warm bed..
Sigh. It’s a tough choice!
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, “No prayer is harder for the hypocrites than the Fajr and the ‘Isha prayers, and if they knew the reward for these prayers at their respective times, they would certainly present themselves (in the mosques) even if they had to crawl.” The Prophet added, “Certainly I decided to order the Mu’adhin (call-maker) to pronounce Iqama and order a man to lead the prayer and then take a fire flame to burn all those who had not left their houses so far for the prayer along with their houses.”
This Hadith talks about one of the qualities/characteristics of hypocrites. If you’re thinking: ‘oh, then it’s not about me’, you really need to continue reading. :)
If you find it hard to pray the Fajr and ‘Isha prayers, you have this trait in you. Does that mean you’re an absolute hypocrite? Not necessarily. BUT you have at least one trait of hypocrisy inside you. And you need to work on yourself to remove this trait. And pray hard!
When I find it hard to pray Fajr or ‘Isha, I remember this Hadith. And to prove to myself that I’m not a hypocrite, I make extra effort for these specific prayers. It’s just one of the ways I fight against my nafs. :P
Remember, the harder it is for you to pray, the more reward you’ll get for praying it.

Narrated Bara’ bin ‘Azib:
Allah’s Apostle prayed facing Baitul-Maqdis for sixteen or seventeen months but he loved to face the Ka’ba (at Mecca) so Allah revealed: “Verily, We have seen the turning of your face to the heaven!” (2:144) So the Prophet faced the Ka’ba and the fools amongst the people namely “the Jews” said, “What has turned them from their Qibla (Bait-ul-Maqdis) which they formerly observed”” (Allah revealed): “Say: ‘To Allah belongs the East and the West. He guides whom he will to a straight path’.” (2:142) A man prayed with the Prophet (facing the Ka’ba) and went out. He saw some of the Ansar praying the ‘Asr prayer with their faces towards Bait-ul-Maqdis, he said, “I bear witness that I prayed with Allah’s Apostle facing the Ka’ba.” So all the people turned their faces towards the Ka’ba.
Can you imagine being there when the whole congregation took a 180 degree turn to face the Ka’bah? What a test of Imaan! That moment decided whether you were a believer or not. Because a true believer would turn ANYwhere as long as it’s Allah’s command. But the hypocrite would be like ‘whaaat?’..
