Light of Dawn

This piece of poetry was written on the theme of SIST ’14: Revive the light within; let the change begin
It was first published on youthclubblog.wordpress.com

I gaze at the moonless sky, covered with black clouds
The darkness piercing my eyes, I close them with a frown
I hear the cry of jackals, oh what an eerie sound!
Rest is as still as death, I sit there as if spellbound

Staring at the shadows of trees, hopelessness grips me
Innocent eyes brimming with tears, in my memory, I can see
Small hands, rough and dirty, plead for just one meal
This is not the story of a single child, it’s of millions in my country

There are those who talk of change yet their walk remains the same
With a fake face, they help society, but their hearts are in plague
The ones who persist in evil, corruption and bad fame
Are no good either from those who play the game without a name

Tired of failing to earn an honest penny is the young man who ends his life
Same goes for the pretty damsel, through whose broken heart pierces the knife
This depression, is it due to a lack of purpose, among the youth, rife?
Is all the education and those degrees really not worth the strife?

Thinking such desolate thoughts, with a heavy head, I fall asleep
Only to be waken by a ray of light, that through the windows peeped
The next day had come and the sun had risen, looking strong and sweet
Despite the darkness every night, resolute to spread the light, through every crack and creep

Sunlight through the trees

Suddenly I felt the hopelessness seeping out of my very soul
It’s true that our situation is bad, but certain things we can control
The sun rises every day, determined to fulfill its role
Nature stares in our face all the time, meant to inspire, so we too set firm goals

After all, darkness and evil prevailed even worse in the Prophet’s times
But in a few years, the picture displayed peace and conquests, with hardly any crimes
It was one man who became the agent of change, with only a few people by his side
Allah’s Word, the Glorious Quran, was what helped them spread the light

So my dear brothers and sisters, pay heed to these signs in nature therein
This Quran has been called An-Nur by the Lord, so it will revive the light within
The depression and frustration will end only if you turn to Him
So understand His Words with an open heart, enlighten yourself and let the change begin!

Revive The Light Inside, Let The Change Begin

Sounds like the SIST 2014 theme? That’s because it is the same. I wrote this piece to participate in Spoken Word competition at SIST . Finished it 1 day before the event. Too bad couldn’t memorize it properly and forgot while reading. No position for me  lol But Alhamdulillah everything happens for a reason so I’m happy :) I just noticed that now I have 27 pieces and if I reach 50 I might make them into a small book in sha Allah. Man I missed posting on this blog so much! Please do read the amazing Ahadith posted everyday.

Would you believe me if I said there’s an army coming?

Would you prepare to fight, or would you start running?

Or maybe you would laugh cuz you know I’m a liar…

And after a short while, I would just stop trying…

Maybe to you I’m like that shepherd who used to lie

Who had no real threat yet “A Lion, A Lion!” he used to cry…

But I’m confused because whatever I say is not even a lie…

I only try to correct you and tell you what is right

Remind you of the Hereafter; tell you about Allah’s Might

So you might come back to the path that is straight

But I’m getting impatient and now I really can’t wait

Cuz it’s late, and I have to go to the cinema with my friend

I really didn’t want to but it is the newest trend

So I spend what I can, to stay up to date

Now if you excuse me I have to leave for my date

But listen to me my mate, you should really fear Allah

Whenever you hear the call, just run for your Salah

And surely Allah will show you your way

The path of those who are guided and not of those who are astray

Man I don’t understand why you don’t listen to me!

I seem to be doing the Da’wah properly!!

So I guess it has something to do with that advice

My mother once gave me while cooking white rice

That if you want to change the world you would have to start from yourself!

That people wouldn’t trust me if I committed sins myself!

How I ignored the words that came straight from her heart

Thinking I had my cool ways, thinking I was really smart

But now I see what she said was indeed very right

It was my narrow thinking and my limited insight

And now I realize it after many long days

That I really have to stop, that I have to mend my ways

Cuz change, change and change!! We all want to see it!

The funny thing is that no one is ready to be it

So I gotta start from today and firmly decide

Make sincere Du’a that only to Allah I should confide

To revive the light inside and let the change begin…

Cuz “Allah does not change the condition of a people, unless they change what is within…” [Interpretation of the meaning – Surah Ar-Ra’d, verse 11]

Be The Change

Righteous Company – Light (Hadith No. 454)

Salam,
Bismillah.

Volume 1, Book 8, Number 454:

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

Two of the companions of the Prophet departed from him on a dark night and were led by two lights like lamps (going in front of them from Allah as a miracle) lighting the way in front of them, and when they parted, each of them was accompanied by one of these lights till he reached their (respective) houses.

This Hadith talks about a miracle. After sitting in Prophet (SAW)’s company, these two companions left with a physical light. I want to talk about another kind of light that one gets as a result of good company. Spiritual, you may say.

You must have felt it at some point in your life. That feeling after meeting a righteous person/religious scholar. Prophet (SAW) once gave a very interesting parable regarding this:

On the authority of Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (رضي الله عنه ), the Prophet (صلي الله عليه و سلم ) said:
A good friend and a bad friend are like a perfume-seller and a blacksmith: The perfume-seller might give you some perfume as a gift, or you might buy some from him, or at least you might smell its fragrance. As for the blacksmith, he might singe your clothes, and at the very least you will breathe in the fumes of the furnace.
[Sahih al-Bukhari, vol 3, #314 and Muslim]

So after visiting a ‘good’ friend, you’re left with a good smell, a nice feeling – a spiritual light. It is your choice to let that light shine, or just let it die out with time.

Tip: to fuel your spiritual light, you need to keep visiting your good friends, find righteous company, spend time with the knowledgable and get as much positive energy from Qur’an, Hadith and Islamic literature as you can.

Smell good! (For the clueless: it is not just a literal statement.) :)

Wassalam.
