An Exception for Ibn Umm Maktum (Ahadith 2479 – 2480)
Bismillah.
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 84 :
Narrated by Al-Bara (radiallaahu `anhu)
When the Divine Inspiration: “Those of the believers who sit (at home)” was revealed, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) sent for Zaid (bin Thabit) (radiallaahu `anhu) who came with a shoulder-blade and wrote on it. Ibn Um-Maktum (radiallaahu `anhu) complained about his blindness and on that the following revelation came: “Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) except those who are disabled (by injury, or are blind or lame etc.) and those who strive hard and fight in the Way of Allah with their wealth and lives).” (4.95)
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 85 :
Narrated by Sahl bin Sad As-Sa’idi
I saw Marwan bin Al-Hakam sitting in the Mosque. So I came forward and sat by his side. He told us that Zaid bin Thabit (radiallaahu `anhu) had told him that Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) had dictated to him the Divine Verse: “Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and lives.’ (4.95) Zaid (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “Ibn-Maktum came to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) while he was dictating to me that very Verse. On that Ibn Um Maktum (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “O Allah’s Apostle! If I had power, I would surely take part in Jihad.” He was a blind man. So Allah sent down revelation to His Apostle while his thigh was on mine and it became so heavy for me that I feared that my thigh would be broken. Then that state of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was over after Allah revealed “…except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame etc.) (4.95)
The ayah:
Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] – other than the disabled – and the mujahideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]. But Allah has preferred the mujahideen over those who remain [behind] with a great reward. [4:95]
Ibn Kathir comments:
At-Tirmidhi recorded that Ibn `Abbas said,
(Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), except those who are disabled), refers to those who did not go to the battle of Badr and those who went to Badr. When the battle of Badr was about to occur, Abu Ahmad bin Jahsh and Ibn Umm Maktum said, `We are blind, O Messenger of Allah! Do we have an excuse’ The Ayah,
(Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), except those who are disabled) was revealed. Allah made those who fight, above those who sit in their homes not hindered by disability.
(but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit (at home), by a huge reward. Degrees of (higher) grades from Him), above the believers who sit at home without a disability hindering them.” This is the wording recorded by At-Tirmidhi, who said, “Hasan Gharib. Allah’s statement,
(Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home),) this is general. Soon after, the revelation came down with,
(except those who are disabled). So whoever has a disability, such as blindness, a limp, or an illness that prevents them from joining Jihad, they were not compared to the Mujahidin who strive in Allah’s cause with their selves and wealth, as those who are not disabled and did not join the Jihad were. In his Sahih, Al-Bukhari recorded that Anas said that the Messenger of Allah said,
«إِنَّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ أَقْوَامًا مَا سِرْتُمْ مِنْ مَسِيرٍ، وَلَا قَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ وَادٍ، إِلَّا وَهُمْ مَعَكُمْ فِيه»
قالوا: وهم بالمدينة يا رسول الله؟ (There are people who remained in Al-Madinah, who were with you in every march you marched and every valley you crossed.) They said, “While they are still in Al-Madinah, O Messenger of Allah” He said,
«نَعَمْ حَبَسَهُمُ الْعُذْر»
(Yes. Only their disability hindered them (from joining you).) Allah said,
(Unto each, Allah has promised good) meaning, Paradise and tremendous rewards. This Ayah indicates that Jihad is not Fard on each and every individual, but it is Fard Kifayah (which is a collective duty). Allah then said,
(but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit (at home), by a huge reward). Allah mentions what He has given them rooms in Paradise, along with His forgiveness and the descent of mercy and blessing on them, as a favor and honor from Him. So He said;
(Degrees of (higher) grades from Him, and forgiveness and mercy. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.). In the Two Sahihs, it is recorded that Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri said that the Messenger of Allah said,
«إِنَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ مِائَةَ دَرَجَةٍ، أَعَدَّهَا اللهُ لِلْمُجَاهِدِينَ فِي سَبِيلِهِ، مَا بَيْنَ كُلِّ دَرَجَتَيْنِ كَمَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْض»
(There are a hundred grades in Paradise that Allah has prepared for the Mujahidin in His cause, between each two grades is the distance between heaven and Earth.)
Always Say InshaAllah! (Hadith No. 2467)
Bismillah.
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 74 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu)
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Once Solomon, son of David said, ‘(By Allah) Tonight I will have sexual intercourse with one hundred (or ninety-nine) women each of whom will give birth to a knight who will fight in Allah’s Cause.’ On that a companion of his said inshaAllah (i.e. if Allah wills) but he (Solomon) did not say, ‘Allah willing.’ Therefore only one of those women conceived and gave birth to a half-man. By Him in Whose Hands Muhammad’s life is, if he had said, “Allah willing’, (he would have begotten sons) all of whom would have been knights striving in Allah’s Cause.”
And never say of anything, “Indeed, I will do that tomorrow”, except [when adding], “If Allah wills.” And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct.” [18:23-24]
When Allah’s Messenger (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam) declared Allah’s Oneness and proclaimed to be the Messenger of Allah (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam) and revelation of Divine Message. The disbelievers of Makkah sent some men to Jewish rabbis in al-Medina and said: “Ask them (the rabbis) about Muhammad (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam), and describe him to them, and tell them what he is saying.
They are the people of the first Book, and they have more knowledge of the Prophets than we do.’ So they set out for al-Madina, they asked the Jewish rabbis about the Messenger of Allah (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam). They described him to them and told them some of his teachings.
The rabbis said: ‘Ask him about three things which we will tell you to ask, if he answers them then he is a Prophet who has been sent (by Allah); if he does not, then he is saying things that are not true, in which case how you will deal with him will be up to you. Ask him about some young men in ancient times, what was their story? For there is a strange and wondrous tale. Ask him about a man who traveled a great deal and reached the east and the west of the earth. What was his story? And ask him about he Ruh (soul or spirit) what is it?
If he tells you about these things, then he is a Prophet, so follow him, but if he does not tell you, then he is a man who is making things up, so deal with him as you see fit.’ So, the men came back to Makkah and said: ‘O people! We have come to you with a decisive solution which will put an end to the problem between you and Muhammad (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam). The Jewish rabbis told us to ask him about some matters,’ and they told them what they were. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam) and said: ‘O Muhammad (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam) tell us,’ and they asked him about the things they had been told to ask.
The Messenger of Allah (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam) said: “I will tell you tomorrow about what you have asked me.” But he (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam) did not say, ‘If Allah Wills.’
Allah Messenger (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam) never spoke anything except with revelation. So, he waited for the revelation from Allah but fifteen days passed away without any revelation concerning those matter which the disbelievers asked, neither did Jibreel (alaihis-salaam) come to him. The people of Makkah started to doubt him and said: ‘Muhammad (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam) promised to tell us the next day and now fifteen days have gone by and he has not told us anything in response to the questions we asked.’
The Messenger of Allah (sallalahu alaihe wa-sallam) felt sad because of the delay in revelation and was grieved by what the people of Makkah were saying about him.
Then Jibreel (alaihis-salaam) came with the revelation of Soorah al-Kahf, which contained answers to the questions and also the above mentioned verse explaining the correct etiquette when determining to do something in the future.
Determining to do something in the future should always be attributed to the Will of Allah, Who is the Knower of the Unseen and Who Alone Knows what was and what is yet to happen and what is not to be.

An interesting story on the subject: Radwan Goes to Buy a Horse
Like a Miracle! (Hadith No. 1274)
Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 574f:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “A man from Bani Israel asked someone from Bani Israel to give him a loan of one thousand Dinars and the latter gave it to him. The debtor went on a voyage (when the time for the payment of the debt became due) but he did not find a boat, so he took a piece of wood and bored it and put 1000 dinars in it and threw it into the sea. The creditor went out and took the piece of wood to his family to be used as fire-wood.” And the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) narrated the narration (and said), “When he sawed the wood, he found his money.”
Isn’t is amazing? The person who owed the other money had full intention to return it, but couldn’t find the means to. So he made a way for it, and Allah helped him with it. That pieced of wood could’ve been found by anyone, right? Allah’s plan. SubhanAllah.
Also, one must be sincere in his words and abide by his promises. Only then Allah will help him fulfill them, even if it takes a miracle.. or something like it. :)
Keeping One’s Word (Hadith No. 1250)
Bismillah.
Volume 2, Book 24, Number 551:
Narrated ‘Urwa bin Az-Zubair (radiallaahu `anhu) and Said bin Al-Musaiyab (radiallaahu `anhu):
Hakim bin Hizam (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “(Once) I asked Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) (for something) and he gave it to me. Again I asked and he gave (it to me). Again I asked and he gave (it to me). And then he said, “O Hakim! This property is like a sweet fresh fruit; whoever takes it without greediness, he is blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness, he is not blessed in it, and he is like a person who eats but is never satisfied; and the upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (receiving) hand.” Hakim (radiallaahu `anhu) added, “I said to Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam), ‘By Him (Allah) Who sent you with the Truth, I shall never accept anything from anybody after you, till I leave this world.’ ” Then Abu Bakr (radiallaahu `anhu) (during his caliphate) called Hakim to give him his share from the war booty (like the other companions of the Prophet ), he refused to accept anything. Then ‘Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) (during his caliphate) called him to give him his share but he refused. On that ‘Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “O Muslims! I would like you to witness that I offered Hakim his share from this booty and he refused to take it.” So Hakim (radiallaahu `anhu) never took anything from anybody after the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) till he died.
- See how the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) keeps giving him without hesitation. Every time he asks, he does not return empty-handed. He’s not made to feel let-down in any way either. It’s way too simple. So amazing.
- The words of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) are so meaningful. “This property is like a sweet fresh fruit; whoever takes it without greediness, he is blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness, he is not blessed in it, and he is like a person who eats but is never satisfied.”
It’s true, if you cling on to a fresh fruit (think grape or date) very tightly [with greed], it’ll be squished. Its juice will splash out. And the one wanting to eat it won’t be left with much. He’ll eat but won’t be satisfied. - Hakim (radiallaahu `anhu) makes a promise to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam), that he won’t take anything from anyone ever again. And he kept it! Throughout his life! O_O
There is a way to come out of your oath [kaffaarah] if you can’t keep it. He had the option, but he didn’t go for it. Such consistency. He followed it so religiously, like his life depended on it. Even when the caliphs offered him his right;y-deserved share from the booty, he refused to take it. Wow. SubhanAllah. Such people. Such lives! May Allah make us more like them in righteousness and piety. And may He be pleased with us like He was pleased with them (sahaabah).
