Carpooling (Ahadith 2623 – 2627)
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 227 :
Narrated by Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa)
That she said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Your companions are returning with the reward of both Hajj and ‘Umra, while I am returning with (the reward of) Hajj only.” He said to her, “Go, and let ‘Abdur-Rahman (i.e. your brother) make you sit behind him (on the animal).” So, he ordered ‘AbdurRahman (radiallaahu `anhu) to let her perform ‘Umra from Al-Tan’im. Then the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) waited for her at the higher region of Mecca till she returned.
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 228 :
Narrated by ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Bakr As-Siddiq (radiallaahu `anhu)
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) ordered me to let ‘Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) sit behind me (on the animal) and to let her perform ‘Umra from At-Tan’im.
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 229 :
Narrated by Anas (radiallaahu `anhu)
I was riding behind Abu Talha (radiallaahu `anhu) (on the same) riding animal) and (the Prophet’s companions) were reciting Talbiya aloud for both Hajj and ‘Umra.
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 230 :
Narrated by ‘Urwa from Usama bin Zaid (radiallaahu `anhu)
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) rode a donkey on which there was a saddle covered by a velvet sheet and let Usama (radiallaahu `anhu) ride behind him (on the donkey).
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 231 :
Narrated by Nafi from ‘Abdullah (radiallaahu `anhu)
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) came to Mecca through its higher region on the day of the Conquest (of Mecca) riding his she-camel on which Usama (radiallaahu `anhu) was riding behind him. Bilal and ‘Uthman bin Talha (radiallaahu `anhumaa), one of the servants of the Ka’ba, were also accompanying him till he made his camel kneel in the mosque and ordered the latter to bring the key of the Ka’ba. He opened the door of the Ka’ba and Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) entered in the company of Usama, Bilal and ‘Uthman (radiallaahu `anhum), and stayed in it for a long period. When he came out, the people rushed to it, and ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) was the first to enter it and found Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu) standing behind the door. He asked Bilal (radiallaahu `anhu), “Where did the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) offer his prayer?” He pointed to the place where he had offered his prayer. ‘Abdullah (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “I forgot to ask him how many Rakat he had performed.”

Hajj – Ridin’ the Animal of Sacrifice (Ahadith 1448 – 1449)
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 748:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) saw a man driving his Badana (sacrificial camel). He said, “Ride on it.” The man said, “It is a Badana.” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Ride on it.” He (the man) said, “It is a Badana.” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Ride on it.” And on the second or the third time he (the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)) added, “Woe to you.”
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 749:
Narrated Anas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) saw a man driving a Badana. He said, “Ride on it.” The man replied, “It is a Badana.” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said (again), “Ride on it.” He (the man) said, “It is a Badana.” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said thrice, “Ride on it.”
What do you say to a person who doesn’t listen to you even when you give him an instruction three times? Answer: woe to you! (It has various interesting translations in Urdu btw.) :P
Coming to the point, one may ride the animal he/she is going to use as hadi (sacrificial animal for Hajj). There are certain conditions as to the minimum age of the animal. In Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, it says:
The shar’i evidence indicates that what is acceptable in the case of sheep is that which has reached the age of six months; in the case of goats it is that which has reached the age of one year; in the case of cattle it is that which has reached the age of two years; and in the case of camels it is that which has reached the age of five years. Anything younger than that is not acceptable as a hadiy or udhiyah. This is what is meant by “a Hady such as you can afford,” because the texts from the Qur’aan and Sunnah explain one another.

`Umrah on a Camel (Hadith No. 1293)
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 593:
Narrated Al-Qasim bin Muhammad:
‘Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) said, “O Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! You performed ‘Umra but I did not.” He said, “O ‘Abdur-Rahman! Go along with your sister and let her perform ‘Umra from Tan’im.” ‘Abdur-Rahman (radiallaahu `anhu) made her ride over the pack-saddle of a she-camel and she performed ‘Umra.
`Aa’ishah (radiallaahu `anhaa) could not perform the `Umrah with the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) because she was caught up with menses in those days. So when they were leaving, Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) asked her brother to accompany her for `Umrah so she did not get left behind. :)
And she went on a camel. I wish that was possible these days. Imagine doing tawaaf and sa`ee in cars. :P

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amir from his father who said:
I saw the Prophet (p.b.u.h) offering the prayer on his mount (Rahila) whatever direction it took.

I saw the Prophet on his Mount praying Nawafil by nodding his head, whatever direction he faced, but Allah’s Apostle never did the same in offering the compulsory prayers. Narrated Salim: At night’Abdullah bin ‘Umar used to offer the prayer on the back of his animal during the journey and never cared about the direction he faced. Ibn ‘Umar said, “Allah’s Apostle used to offer the optional prayer on the back of his Mount facing any direction and also used to pray the Witr on it but never offered the compulsory prayer on it.”
Volume 2, Book 20, Number 203:
Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah
The Prophet used to pray (the Nawafil) on his Mount facing east and whenever he wanted to offer the compulsory prayer, he used to dismount and face the Qibla.
Volume 2, Book 20, Number 204:
Narrated Anas bin Sirin:
We went to receive Anas bin Malik when he returned from Sham and met him at a place called ‘Ain-at-Tamr. I saw him praying riding the donkey, with his face to this direction, i.e. to the left of the Qibla. I said to him, “I have seen you offering the prayer in a direction other than that of the Qibla.” He replied, “If I had not seen Allah’s Apostle doing it, I would not have done it.”
Praying in cars, planes, trains or other means of conveyance, where one cannot face the qiblah or pray standing, is not permissible in the case of obligatory prayers unless two conditions are met:
1 – There should be the fear that the time for the obligatory prayer will end before reaching your destination. But if you will reach your destination before the time for prayer is over, you should wait until you get there to pray.
2 – It should not be possible to get off and pray on the ground. If it is possible to do so then you must do that.
If these two conditions are met, then it is permissible to pray in the vehicle. The evidence for it being permissible to pray in this case is the general meaning of the verses in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Allaah burdens not a person beyond his scope”
“So keep your duty to Allaah and fear Him as much as you can”
“and [Allaah] has not laid upon you in religion any hardship”
With regard to supererogatory (naafil) prayers, the matter is more relaxed; it is permissible for the Muslim to pray in the vehicles mentioned no matter what direction they are facing, even if he could get down on the ground at some times, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to pray naafil prayers on his mount no matter what direction it was facing. Jaabir narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) “used to pray voluntary prayers when he was riding without facing the qiblah.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1094). But it is better to face the qiblah when starting to pray a naafil prayer, if that is possible when travelling.

Witr – While Traveling (Ahadith 811 – 812)
Volume 2, Book 16, Number 811:
Narrated Said bin Yasar:
I was going to Mecca in the company of ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar and when I apprehended the approaching dawn, I dismounted and offered the Witr prayer and then joined him. ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar said, “Where have you been?” I replied, “I apprehended the approaching dawn so I dismounted and prayed the Witr prayer.” ‘Abdullah said, “Isn’t it sufficient for you to follow the good example of Allah’s Apostle?” I replied, “Yes, by Allah.” He said, “Allah’s Apostle used to pray Witr on the back of the camel (while on a journey).”
Volume 2, Book 16, Number 812:
Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:
The Prophet used to offer (Nawafil) prayers on his Rahila (mount) facing its direction by signals, but not the compulsory prayer. He also used to pray Witr on his (mount) Rahila.
1. Prophet (SAW) used to pray witr while traveling. Meaning, even while you’re shortening the prayers in your travel, you still pray the witr prayer.
The majority of scholars (jumhoor ul-‘ulmeaa’) assert that salaat ul-witr (witr prayer) is a sunnah mu’akkada (confirmed sunnah that the Prophet peace be upon him, practiced consistently), and that it is not obligatory. This is based on the hadith (saying) regarding the bedouin who once came to the Prophet asking about Islam, the Prophet answered, “Five prayers within one day-and-night.” The bedouin asked, “Am I obliged to other than those?” The Prophet replied, “Unless you volunteer of your own.” (al-hadith muttafaqun alaih.)
Some scholars have said that qiyaam ul-layl (prayer at the heart of night) and salaat ul-witr are the best of the voluntary prayers (al-nawaafil). Therefore, one should consistently practice them and not neglect them. The Prophet did not neglect the prayers during night nor two rak’ah before al-fajr neither in residence nor in travel (as related in al-sunnah al-sahihah).
2. He (SAW) used to pray witr on the mount (camel). Meaning, you need not get off your car in order to pray witr.
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
“The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to pray voluntary (nafl) prayers when riding on his camel, no matter what direction it was facing, when he came from Makkah to Madeenah.” Then Ibn ‘Umar recited this aayah (interpretation of the meaning): “And to Allaah belong the east and the west, so wherever you turn yourselves or your faces, there is the Face of Allaah (and He is High above, over His Throne)…” [al-Baqarah 2:115]
Ibn ‘Umar said: “It was concerning this that this aayah was revealed.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 2883; he said, this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth)
And it (facing qiblah direction) does not apply to one who is praying a naafil prayer or witr prayer whilst riding on a riding-animal etc., but it is.. mustahabb for him to face the qiblah if he is able to do so when pronouncing the takbeer of ihraam (at the beginning of the prayer), then he may face whatever direction he is facing.
