Joint Ownership of Slaves (Ahadith 2168 – 2169)

Bismillah.

Ahadith 2166 – 2167 (below) are repeats. Read them here.

Volume 3, Book 44, Number 669:
Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) decreed that one should not eat two dates together at a time unless he gets the permission from his companions (sharing the meal with him).

Volume 3, Book 44, Number 670:
Narrated Jabala:
“While at Medina we were struck with famine. Ibn Az-Zubair used to provide us with dates as our food. Ibn ‘Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) used to pass by us and say, “Don’t eat two dates together at a time as the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) has forbidden eating two dates together at a time (in a gathering) unless one takes the permission of one’s companion brother.”

Today’s Ahadith:

Volume 3, Book 44, Number 671:
Narrated Nafi:
Ibn ‘Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, ‘If one manumits his share of a jointly possessed slave, and can afford the price of the other shares according to the adequate price of the slave, the slave will be completely manumitted; otherwise he will be partially manumitted.’ ” (Aiyub, a sub-narrator is not sure whether the saying ” … otherwise he will be partially manumitted” was said by Nafi’ or the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam).)

Volume 3, Book 44, Number 672:
Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Whoever manumits his share of a jointly possessed slave, it is imperative for him to get that slave manumitted completely by paying the remaining price, and if he does not have sufficient money to manumit him, then the price of the slave should be estimated justly, and he is to be allowed to work and earn the amount that will manumit him (without overburdening him)”.

So either the joint owner pays off the other half as well, or the slave works to buy it off.

The Three Persons Allah will be Against on the Day of Judgement (Hadith No. 1925)

Bismillah.

Hadith no. 1924 (below) is a repeat. Read it here.

Volume 3, Book 34, Number 429 :
Narrated by ‘Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa)
When the last verses of Surat-al-Baqara were revealed, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) went out (of his house to the Mosque) and said, “The trade of alcohol has become illegal.”

Today’s Hadith:

Volume 3, Book 34, Number 430 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu)
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Allah says, ‘I will be against three persons on the Day of Resurrection:
1. One who makes a covenant in My Name, but he proves treacherous.
2. One who sells a free person (as a slave) and eats the price.
3. And one who employs a laborer and gets the full work done by him but does not pay him his wages.’ “

Allah (SWT) saying “I will be against so and so” is a huge thing. It’s not like the president of United States is saying it so one shouldn’t be afraid. This is Allah, King of all kings, Master of all masters, the One with most authority and power. When He says He’s against someone, it’s a big deal!

Imagine what Allah would do to the person He’s against on the Day of Judgement.. would He look at Him, make any friendly conversation with him, or extend any protection or help? That person would be in some serious trouble that day! May Allah not make us of those who earn His wrath.

We have to make sure we don’t fall in either of the above 3 categories:

  1. Taking an oath in Allah’s Name and then not fulfilling it. This can happen quite easily if we’re not cautious. Extra care required.
Don’t think the everyday promises/commitments you make aren’t included. Just saying!
  2. Selling a free person as a slave.. not really a problem in this day and age, but we can be careful about taking advantage of other people. Never take credit for something you didn’t do. Never accept compensation for a task you didn’t perform.
  3. Employing someone and not paying them even after getting all the work done by them. This includes servants in your home and employees in your office/business. It’s better to pay the salary early.. Abdullah ibn Umar (Radhi-Allahu ‘anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries.” [Tirmidhi Hadith: 2987 and Ibn Majah]

The Story of Sarah and the King of Egypt (Hadith No. 1915)

Bismillah.

Volume 3, Book 34, Number 420 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu)
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “The Prophet Abraham (`alayhissalaam) emigrated with Sarah and entered a village where there was a king or a tyrant. (The king) was told that Abraham (`alayhissalaam) had entered (the village) accompanied by a woman who was one of the most charming women. So, the king sent for Abraham (`alayhissalaam) and asked, ‘O Abraham! Who is this lady accompanying you?’ Abraham replied, ‘She is my sister (i.e. in religion).’ Then Abraham (`alayhissalaam) returned to her and said, ‘Do not contradict my statement, for I have informed them that you are my sister. By Allah, there are no true believers on this land except you and I.’ Then Abraham (`alayhissalaam) sent her to the king. When the king got to her, she got up and performed ablution, prayed and said, ‘O Allah! If I have believed in You and Your Apostle, and have saved my private parts from everybody except my husband, then please do not let this pagan overpower me.’ On that the king fell in a mood of agitation and started moving his legs. Seeing the condition of the king, Sarah said, ‘O Allah! If he should die, the people will say that I have killed him.’ The king regained his power, and proceeded towards her but she got up again and performed ablution, prayed and said, ‘O Allah! If I have believed in You and Your Apostle and have kept my private parts safe from all except my husband, then please do not let this pagan overpower me.’ The king again fell in a mood of agitation and started moving his legs. On seeing that state of the king, Sarah said, ‘O Allah! If he should die, the people will say that I have killed him.’ The king got either two or three attacks, and after recovering from the last attack he said, ‘By Allah! You have sent a satan to me. Take her to Abraham and give her Ajar.’ So she came back to Abraham (`alayhissalaam) and said, ‘Allah humiliated the pagan and gave us a slave-girl for service.”

Ibn Kathir mentions a hadith about this incident in his book “Stories of the Prophets“. Here is the relevant part of it to help you understand the story better:

Abu Hurairah narrated that Abraham (peace be upon him) did not tell a lie except on three occasions, twice for the sake of Allah, Exalted and Almighty.

The first time was when he said: “I am sick.” When his people were holding a festival in honor of their gods, Abraham excused himself by saying he was sick.

The second time was when he said: “I have not done this but the big idol has done it.”

The third was while Abraham and Sarah, his wife, were going on a journey. They passed by the territory of a tyrant. Someone said to the tyrant: “This man (Abraham) is accompanied by a very charming lady.”

So the tyrant sent for Abraham and asked him about Sarah asking, “Who is this lady?” Abraham said: “She is my sister.” Abraham went to Sarah said “O Sarah! There are no believers on the surface of the earth except you and me. This man asked me about you and I have told him that you are my sister. Do not contradict my statement.” The tyrant then called Sarah.

When she went to him, he tried to take a hold of her with his hand, but his hand got stiff and he was confounded. He asked Sarah: “Pray to Allah for me and I shall not harm you.” Then, Sarah asked Allah to cure him and he got cured.

He tried to take hold of her for the second time, but his hand got as stiff as — or stiffer — than before, and he was once more confounded.

He again requested Sarah: “Pray to Allah for me, and I will not harm you.” Sarah asked Allah again to cure him, and he became all right. He then called one of his guards who had brought her and said: “You have not brought me a human being but have brought me a devil.” The tyrant then gave Hajar as a maid servant to Sarah.

Abraham, gesturing with his hand, asked: “What has happened?” She replied: “Allah has spoiled the evil plot of the infidel or immoral person and gave me Hajar for service.

These “lies” were, in fact, not lies at all. They were merely allusions and ambiguous statements.

When he said to his idolatrous people: “I am sick” [Sûrah al-Sâffât: 87], he intended to insult their idols, of which he was sickened, and to support Allah’s religion. He wanted to show them the falsehood of their idolatry.

When Abraham destroyed the idols of his people, he left the largest idol standing. When his people confronted him and accused him, he said: “Nay! It was done by this largest one of them.” [Sûrah al-Anbiyâ’: 63] By this, he intended to show them clearly that their idols could not actually talk or act or help themselves in any way, and that they were the same as any other pile of rocks. He was forcing them, in this way, to admit that their idols were helpless.

As for his saying to his wife: “Tell him that you are my sister”, we have already seen how he was referring to her being his sister in faith.

Selling the Sinful Slave Girl (Ahadith 1857 – 1858)

Bismillah.

Ahadith 1855 & 1856 are repeats. They’re a summary of most of the things we’ve learnt in the Book of Sales and Trade that are prohibited.

Volume 3, Book 34, Number 360 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu)
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Do not go forward to meet the caravan (to buy from it on the way before it reaches the town). And do not urge buyers to cancel their purchases to sell them (your own goods) yourselves, and do not practice Najsh. A town dweller should not sell the goods for the desert dweller. Do not leave sheep unmilked for a long time, when they are on sale, and whoever buys such an animal has the option of returning it, after milking it, along with a Sa of dates or keeping it. it has been kept unmilked for a long period by the seller (to deceive others).

Volume 3, Book 34, Number 361 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu)
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Whoever buys a sheep which has been kept unmilked for a long period, and milks it, can keep it if he is satisfied, and if he is not satisfied, he can return it, but he should pay one Sa of dates for the milk.”

Today’s Ahadith:

Volume 3, Book 34, Number 362 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu)
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “If a slave-girl commits illegal sexual intercourse and it is proved beyond doubt, then her owner should lash her and should not blame her after the legal punishment. And then if she repeats the illegal sexual intercourse he should lash her again and should not blame her after the legal punishment, and if she commits it a third time, then he should sell her even for a hair rope.”

Volume 3, Book 34, Number 363 :
Narrated by Abu Huraira and Zaid bin Khalid (radiallaahu `anhumaa)
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was asked about the slave-girl, if she was a virgin and committed illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “If she committed illegal sexual intercourse, lash her, and if she did it a second time, then lash her again, and if she repeated the third time, then sell her even for a hair rope.” Ibn Shihab said, “I don’t know whether to sell her after the third or fourth offense.”

This is for an unmarried, virgin slave girl. The punishment for a married slave girl is mentioned in Surah an-Nisa: 25.

Punishment is only prescribed when the crime is proved beyond doubt. Lashes for the first two times and selling off for even the lowest price the third time around without lashes. Why? Because if lashes don’t do her any good, changing her master and surroundings just might.

When The Earth Starts To Shake…

In light of the frequently occurring earthquakes these days… Most of these signs can be found in various Hadiths of the Prophet (SallAllaahu Alaiyhi Wasallam). I tried to find the ones I could. See the links in sha Allah.

As we reach close to the end of times

The earth gets filled with sins and crimes

When Humans worse than animals behave

When a child treats his own mother as a slave (1)

When false prophets start to increase in number (2)

When you wake people up but they prefer to slumber

When the most loved person is a liar and deceiver

When the most hated person is a faithful believer

When even Muslims start believing in false prophecies

When no one is afraid of committing hypocrisy

When killing someone becomes a piece of cake

When while taking a life, a person’s hands don’t even shake (3)

When children of fornication are born everyday

When people stop caring if someone goes astray

When all of this gets too much to take

Then that is when the earth frequently starts to shake… (4)
