Volume 4, Book 52, Number 276 :
Narrated by Al-Bara bin Azib (radiallaahu `anhu)
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) appointed ‘Abdullah bin Jubair (radiallaahu `anhu) as the commander of the infantry men (archers) who were fifty on the day (of the battle) of Uhud. He instructed them, “Stick to your place, and don’t leave it even if you see birds snatching us, till I send for you; and if you see that we have defeated the infidels and made them flee, even then you should not leave your place till I send for you.” Then the infidels were defeated. By Allah, I saw the women fleeing lifting up their clothes revealing their leg-bangles and their legs. So, the companions of ‘Abdullah bin Jubair (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “The booty! O people, the booty ! Your companions have become victorious, what are you waiting for now?” ‘Abdullah bin Jubair (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “Have you forgotten what Allah’s Apostle said to you?” They replied, “By Allah! We will go to the people (i.e. the enemy) and collect our share from the war booty.” But when they went to them, they were forced to turn back defeated. At that time Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) in their rear was calling them back. Only twelve men remained with the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and the infidels martyred seventy men from us. On the day (of the battle) of Badr, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and his companions had caused the ‘Pagans to lose 140 men, seventy of whom were captured and seventy were killed. Then Abu Sufyan asked thrice, “Is Muhammad present amongst these people?” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) ordered his companions not to answer him. Then he asked thrice, “Is the son of Abu Quhafa present amongst these people?” He asked again thrice, “Is the son of Al-Khattab present amongst these people?” He then returned to his companions and said, “As for these (men), they have been killed.” ‘Umar (radiallaahu `anhu) could not control himself and said (to Abu Sufyan), “You told a lie, by Allah! O enemy of Allah! All those you have mentioned are alive, and the thing which will make you unhappy is still there.” Abu Sufyan said, “Our victory today is a counterbalance to yours in the battle of Badr, and in war (the victory) is always undecided and is shared in turns by the belligerents, and you will find some of your (killed) men mutilated, but I did not urge my men to do so, yet I do not feel sorry for their deed” After that he started reciting cheerfully, “O Hubal, be high!” On that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said (to his companions), “Why don’t you answer him back?” They said, “O Allah’s Apostle What shall we say?” He said, “Say, Allah is Higher and more Sublime.” (Then) Abu Sufyan said, “We have the (idol) Al Uzza, and you have no Uzza.” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said (to his companions), “Why don’t you answer him back?” They asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What shall we say?” He said, “Say, Allah is our Helper and you have no helper.”
وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُم بِإِذْنِهِ ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ وَعَصَيْتُم مِّن بَعْدِ مَا أَرَاكُم مَّا تُحِبُّونَ ۚ مِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ ۚ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ ۖ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا عَنكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing the enemy by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then he turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers.” [3:152]

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 69 :
Narrated by Anas bin Malik (radiallaahu `anhu)
For thirty days Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) invoked Allah to curse those who had killed the companions of Bir-Mauna; he invoked evil upon the tribes of Ral, Dhakwan, and Usaiya who disobeyed Allah and His Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam). There was reveled about those who were killed at Bir-Mauna a Quranic Verse we used to recite, but it was cancelled later on. The Verse was: “Inform our people that we have met our Lord. He is pleased with us and He has made us pleased”.
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 70 :
Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah (radiallaahu `anhu)
“Some people drank alcohol in the morning of the day (of the battle) of Uhud and were martyred (on the same day).” Sufyan was asked, “(Were they martyred) in the last part of the day?)” He replied, “Such information does not occur in the narration.”
The questioner means to ask about the fate of those martyrs considering they drank alcohol in the morning. The prohibition wasn’t established at that time so alcohol wasn’t haram for them. Ibn Kathir mentions a narration in the commentary of verses 90-91 of Surah Al-Maa’idah:
﴿يَـأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالاٌّنصَابُ وَالاٌّزْلاَمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَـنِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ﴾
(O you who believe! Khamr, Maysir, Ansab, and Azlam are an abomination of Shaytan’s handiwork. So avoid that in order that you may be successful.)﴿5:90-91﴾ So they said, `We abstained, O Lord!’ Later, some people said, `O Allah’s Messenger! Some people died in the cause of Allah, while some others died in their beds, but they used to drink alcohol and indulge in gambling, which Allah has made a Rijs of the work of Shaytan.’ So Allah sent down,
﴿لَيْسَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّـلِحَـتِ جُنَاحٌ فِيمَا طَعِمُواْ﴾
(Those who believe and do righteous good deeds, there is no sin on them for what they ate…) ﴿5:93﴾, until the end of the Ayah. The Prophet said,
«لَوْ حُرِّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَتَرَكُوهُ كَمَا تَرَكْتُم»
(Had they been made impermissible for them, they would have abandoned them as you have abandoned them.) Ahmad recorded this Hadith.

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 60 :
Narrated by Abdullah bin Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu)
That Abu Sufyan told him that Heraclius said to him, “I asked you about the outcome of your battles with him (i.e. the Prophet ) and you told me that you fought each other with alternate success. So the Apostles are tested in this way but the ultimate victory is always theirs.
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 61 :
Narrated by Anas (radiallaahu `anhu)
My uncle Anas bin An-Nadr (radiallaahu `anhu) was absent from the Battle of Badr. He said, “O Allah’s Apostle! I was absent from the first battle you fought against the pagans. (By Allah) if Allah gives me a chance to fight the pagans, no doubt. Allah will see how (bravely) I will fight.” On the day of Uhud when the Muslims turned their backs and fled, he said, “O Allah! I apologize to You for what these (i.e. his companions) have done, and I denounce what these (i.e. the pagans) have done.” Then he advanced and Sad bin Muadh (radiallaahu `anhu) met him. He said “O Sad bin Muadh ! By the Lord of An-Nadr, Paradise! I am smelling its aroma coming from before (the mountain of) Uhud,” Later on Sad (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “O Allah’s Apostle! I cannot achieve or do what he (i.e. Anas bin An-Nadr) did. We found more than eighty wounds by swords and arrows on his body. We found him dead and his body was mutilated so badly that none except his sister could recognize him by his fingers.” We used to think that the following Verse was revealed concerning him and other men of his sort: “Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah…” (33.23) His sister Ar-Rubbaya’ broke a front tooth of a woman and Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) ordered for retaliation. On that Anas (bin An-Nadr) (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “O Allah’s Apostle! By Him Who has sent you with the Truth, my sister’s tooth shall not be broken.” Then the opponents of Anas’s sister accepted the compensation and gave up the claim of retaliation. So Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “There are some people amongst Allah’s slaves whose oaths are fulfilled by Allah when they take them.”
Volume 4, Book 52, Number 62 :
Narrated by Kharija bin Zaid
Zaid bin Thabit (radiallaahu `anhu) said, “When the Quran was compiled from various written manuscripts, one of the Verses of Surat Al-Ahzab was missing which I used to hear Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) reciting. I could not find it except with Khuzaima bin Thabit Al-Ansari (radiallaahu `anhu), whose witness Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) regarded as equal to the witness of two men. And the Verse was:– “Among the believers are men who have been true to what they covenanted with Allah.” (33.23)
“Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah.” [33:23]
Ibn Kathir comments:
When Allah mentions how the hypocrites broke their promise to Him that they would not turn their backs, He describes the believers as firmly adhering to their covenant and their promise:
﴿صَدَقُواْ مَا عَـهَدُواْ اللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ فَمِنْهُمْ مَّن قَضَى نَحْبَهُ﴾
(﴿they﴾ have been true to their covenant with Allah; of them some have fulfilled their Nahbah;) Some of them said: “Met their appointed time (i.e., death).” Al-Bukhari said, “Their covenant, and refers back to the beginning of the Ayah.”
﴿وَمِنْهُمْ مَّن يَنتَظِرُ وَمَا بَدَّلُواْ تَبْدِيلاً﴾
(and some of them are still waiting, but they have never changed in the least.) means, they have never changed or broken their covenant with Allah. Al-Bukhari recorded that Zayd bin Thabit said: “When we wrote down the Mushaf, an Ayah from Surat Al-Ahzab was missing, which I used to hear the Messenger of Allah reciting. I did not find it with anyone except Khuzaymah bin Thabit Al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, whose testimony the Messenger of Allah counted as equal to that of two other men. (The Ayah in question was:)
﴿مِّنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ رِجَالٌ صَدَقُواْ مَا عَـهَدُواْ اللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ﴾
(Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah;)” This was recorded by Al-Bukhari but not by Muslim, It was also recorded by Ahmad in his Musnad, and by At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa’i in the chapters on Tafsir in their Sunans. At-Tirmidhi said, “Hasan Sahih. Al-Bukhari also recorded that Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “We think that this Ayah was revealed concerning Anas bin An-Nadr, may Allah be pleased with him:
﴿مِّنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ رِجَالٌ صَدَقُواْ مَا عَـهَدُواْ اللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ﴾
(Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah.)” This was reported only by Al-Bukhari, but there are corroborating reports with other chains of narration. Imam Ahmad recorded that Anas said: “My paternal uncle Anas bin Al-Nadr, may Allah be pleased with him, after whom I was named, was not present with this Messenger of Allah at Badr, and this distressed him. He said: `The first battle at which the Messenger of Allah was present, and I was absent; if Allah shows me another battle with the Messenger of Allah , Allah will see what I will do!’ He did not want to say more than that. He was present with the Messenger of Allah at Uhud, where he met Sa`d bin Mu`adh, may Allah be pleased with him. Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said to him, `O Abu `Amr! Where are you going’ He replied, `I long for the fragrance of Paradise and I have found it near the mountain of Uhud.’ He fought them until he was killed, may Allah be pleased with him. Eighty-odd stab wounds and spear wounds were found on his body, and his sister, my paternal aunt Ar-Rabayyi` bint Al-Nadr said, `I only recognized my brother by his fingertips.’

Narrated Sad (bin Abi Waqqas) (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) distributed something (from the resources of Zakat) amongst a group of people while I was sitting amongst them, but he left a man whom I considered the best of the lot. So, I went up to Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and asked him secretly, “Why have you left that person? By Allah! I consider him a believer.” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Or merely a Muslim (Who surrender to Allah).” I remained quiet for a while but could not help repeating my question because of what I knew about him. I said, “O Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! Why have you left that person? By Allah! I consider him a believer. ” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Or merely a Muslim.” I remained quiet for a while but could not help repeating my question because of what I knew about him. I said, “O Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)! Why have you left that person? By Allah! I consider him a believer.” The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “Or merely a Muslim.” Then Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “I give to a person while another is dearer to me, for fear that he may be thrown in the Hell-fire on his face (by renegading from Islam).”

Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “The poor person is not the one who goes round the people and ask them for a mouthful or two (of meals) or a date or two but the poor is that who has not enough (money) to satisfy his needs and whose condition is not known to others, that others may give him something in charity, and who does not beg of people.”

Narrated Abu Huraira (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “No doubt, it is better for a person to take a rope and proceed in the morning to the mountains and cut the wood and then sell it, and eat from this income and give alms from it than to ask others for something.”
Narrated Abu Humaid As-Sa’idi (radiallaahu `anhu):
We took part in the holy battle of Tabuk in the company of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and when we arrived at the Wadi-al-Qura, there was a woman in her garden. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) asked his companions to estimate the amount of the fruits in the garden, and Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) estimated it at ten Awsuq (One Wasaq = 60 Sa’s, and 1 Sa’= 3 kg. approximately). The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said to that lady, “Check what your garden will yield.” When we reached Tabuk, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “There will be a strong wind tonight and so no one should stand and whoever has a camel, should fasten it.” So we fastened our camels. A strong wind blew at night and a man stood up and he was blown away to a mountain called Taiy. The King of Aila sent a white mule and a sheet for wearing to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) as a present, and wrote to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) that his people would stay in their place (and will pay Jizya taxation). When the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) reached Wadi-al-Qura he asked that woman how much her garden had yielded. She said, “Ten Awsuq,” and that was what Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) had estimated. Then the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) said, “I want to reach Medina quickly, and whoever among you wants to accompany me, should hurry up.” The sub-narrator Ibn Bakkar said something which meant: When the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) saw Medina he said, “This is Taabah.” And when he saw the mountain of Uhud, he said, “This mountain loves us and we love it. Shall I tell you of the best amongst the Ansar?” They replied in the affirmative. He said, “The family of Bani-n-Najjar, and then the family of Bani Saa’ida or Bani Al-Harith bin Al-Khazraj. (The above-mentioned are the best) but there is goodness in all the families of Ansar.”
Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)’s estimate regarding the woman’s garden’s yield was correct. So was his prediction about the wind at night. He had this special way of knowing the unknown: revelation. :)
Al-Mulhib (commentator) says that this Hadith shows that the leader should advise his followers about worldly matters as he does in religious matters. Also, gifts from non-Muslims can be accepted. [Sharh Ibn Battaal]
Another name for Madinah: Taabah. And, gotta love the Ansaar! Loving them is part of Imaan, did you know?
Mount Uhud: beloved. It’s a special mountain, capable of loving. <3
Narrated Ibn Abbas:
The Prophet said, “Allah has made Mecca a sanctuary (sacred place) and it was a sanctuary before me and will be so after me. It was made legal for me (to fight in it) for a few hours of the day. None is allowed to uproot its thorny shrubs or to cut its trees or to chase its game or to pick up its fallen things except by a person who announces it publicly.” On that Al-Abbas said (to the Prophet), “Except Al-Idhkhir for our goldsmiths and for our graves.” And so the Prophet added, “Except Al-Idhkhir. ” And Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet said, “Except Al-Idhkhir for our graves and houses.” And Ibn Abbas said, “For their goldsmiths and houses.”

Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah:
Allah’s Apostle came to Abdullah bin Ubai (a hypocrite) after his death and he has been laid in his pit (grave). He ordered (that he be taken out of the grave) and he was taken out. Then he placed him on his knees and threw some of his saliva on him and clothed him in his (the Prophet’s) own shirt. Allah knows better (why he did so). ‘Abdullah bin Ubai had given his shirt to Al-Abbas to wear. Abu Harun said, “Allah’s Apostle at that time had two shirts and the son of ‘Abdullah bin Ubai said to him, ‘O Allah’s Apostle! Clothe my father in your shirt which has been in contact with your skin.’ ‘ Sufyan added, “Thus people think that the Prophet clothed ‘Abdullah bin Tubal in his shirt in lieu of what he (Abdullah) had done (for Al Abbas, the Prophet’s uncle.)”

About Jabir (RA)’s father..
When the time of the Battle of Uhud approached, my father called me at night and said, “I think that I will be the first amongst the companions of the Prophet to be martyred. I do not leave anyone after me dearer to me than you, except Allah’s Apostle’s soul and I owe some debt and you should repay it and treat your sisters favorably (nicely and politely).” So in the morning he was the first to be martyred and was buried along with another (martyr). I did not like to leave him with the other (martyr) so I took him out of the grave after six months of his burial and he was in the same condition as he was on the day of burial, except a slight change near his ear.
A man was buried along with my father and I did not like it till I took him (i.e. my father) out and buried him in a separate grave.
Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah:
The Prophet collected every two martyrs of Uhud (in one grave) and then he would ask, “Which of them knew the Quran more?” And if one of them was pointed out for him as having more knowledge, he would put him first in the Lahd. The Prophet said, “I will be a witness on these on the Day of Resurrection.” Then he ordered them to be buried with their blood on their bodies and he did not have them washed.
- Digging up the grave of a deceased person – not allowed. There are certain conditions in this matter. Read this for details.
- Burying two persons in the same grave – not allowed, unless it’s a necessity (as was after Uhud). Details to be found in the link above.
- Does the Earth disintegrate the bodies of martyrs? Some say yes, some say it was exclusive to the martyrs of Uhud only. And Allah knows best.
- How to advise your son about dealing with affairs after your death? Learn it from Abdullah (RA) [Jabir (RA)’s father]:
“I do not leave anyone after me dearer to me than you, except Allah’s Apostle’s soul and I owe some debt and you should repay it and treat your sisters favorably (nicely and politely).”
- He was leaving behind his whole family, but he asked Jabir (RA) to take care of his most beloved person – Prophet (SAW). <3
- He was worried about the debts that he hadn’t paid yet. Seems like he was way too eager to meet Allah, and that too, after finishing all worldly matters.
- He admonishes Jabir (RA) to take care of his sisters afterwards.
Note that Jabir (RA) was about seventeen years old at that time. Respecting his father’s wishes, he married an older woman, hoping that she’ll be like a mother to his sisters. He was young, he could’ve married someone his own age, to enjoy his life. And that’s exactly what Prophet (SAW) said to him..
Jabir b. Abdillah reported that once he was on an expedition with the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam, and when they were close to the city of Madinah, he sped on his mount. The Prophetsalla Allahu alayhi wa sallam asked him why he was in such a hurry to return home. Jabir replied, “I am recently married!” The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam asked, “To an older lady or a younger one?” [the Arabic could also read: “To a widow or a virgin?”], to which he replied, “A widow.” The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, “But why didn’t you marry a younger girl, so that you could play with her, and she could play with you, and you could make her laugh, and she could make you laugh?” He said, “O Messenger of Allah! My father died a martyr at Uhud, leaving behind daughters, so I did not wish to marry a young girl like them, but rather an older one who could take care of them and look after them.” The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa salam replied, “You have made the correct choice… Jabir said, “So when we were about to enter the city, the Prophet salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallamsaid to me, ‘Slow down, and enter at night, so that she who has not combed may comb her hair, and she who has not shaved may shave her private area.’ Then he said to me, ‘When you enter upon her, then be wise and gentle.'”
