Volume 3, Book 31, Number 208:
I asked ‘Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa) “Did Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) use to choose some special days (for fasting)?” She replied, “No, but he used to be regular (constant) (in his service of worshipping). Who amongst you can endure what Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to endure?”
And that question makes one shudder. Really. Who can be like the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) when it comes to worship, or akhlaaq, or leadership, or anything? There’s not ONE man who supersedes him in any respect. Not even when it comes to suffering hardships. Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to feel double the pain even in fever. So Ayesha (radiallaahu `anhu)’s question really hits home, doesn’t it? Who amongst you can endure what Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to endure?
Having said that, we must not think that since Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) was so perfect, and no one can ever be like him, there’s no point in trying to follow his footsteps. Rather, his perfection is the reason why we must follow him. Since there’s none better than him, it only makes sense to follow none but him, you see?
May Allah enable us to follow his sunnah in the best manner so we can please Him and him on the Day of Judgement. May we get a spot closest to him in Jannah. May we get the chance to see him and enjoy his nearness and company. May his love only grow in our hearts and lead us to do great things – like him. Sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam. <3
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 190:
Narrated ‘Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa):
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to fast till one would say that he would never stop fasting, and he would abandon fasting till one would say that he would never fast. I never saw Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) fasting for a whole month except the month of Ramadan, and did not see him fasting in any month more than in the month of Sha’ban.
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 191:
Narrated ‘Aisha (radiallaahu `anhaa):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) never fasted in any month more than in the month of Sha’ban. He used to say, “Do those deeds which you can do easily, as Allah will not get tired (of giving rewards) till you get bored and tired (of performing religious deeds).” The most beloved prayer to the Prophet was the one that was done regularly (throughout the life) even if it were little. And whenever the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) offered a prayer he used to offer it regularly .
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 192:
Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (radiallaahu `anhu):
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) never fasted a full month except the month of Ramadan, and he used to fast till one could say, “By Allah, he will never stop fasting,” and he would abandon fasting till one would say, “By Allah, he will never fast.”
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 193:
Narrated Anas (radiallaahu `anhu):
Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) used to leave fasting in a certain month till we thought that he would not fast in that month, and he used to fast in another month till we thought he would not stop fasting at all in that month. And if one wanted to see him praying at night, one could see him (in that condition), and if one wanted to see him sleeping at night, one could see him (in that condition) too.
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 194:
I asked Anas (radiallaahu `anhu) about the fasting of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam). He said “Whenever I liked to see the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) fasting in any month, I could see that, and whenever I liked to see him not fasting, I could see that too, and if I liked to see him praying in any night, I could see that, and if I liked to see him sleeping, I could see that, too.” Anas (radiallaahu `anhu) further said, “I never touched silk or velvet softer than the hand of Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam) and never smelled musk or perfumed smoke more pleasant than the smell of Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam).”
After reading all these narrations, the one who wants to overdo fasting and praying at night (or any other form of worship), and give up all the good of this world (zuhd) needs to answer one question: Is he more righteous than the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam)?
Continuity and balance. These two things will take you a long way inshaAllah. Whatever little/more you do of worship, continue it. And don’t overdo anything – not even worship. :)

“We relate to thee their story in truth: they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We advanced them in guidance: We gave strength to their hearts: Behold, they stood up and said: “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and of the earth: never shall we call upon any god other than Him: if we did, we should indeed have uttered an enormity!” (Al-Kahf 18:13-14)
I always believed that youth is a power of any nation. Because it’s the prime time of one’s life. The time when one is energetic, enthusiastic, has hopes, ready to do anything. Just for a moment give a thought about today’s youth, what comes to mind… pretty simple… modern trends of life, loud stereo music, baggy pants, friends, talking about ‘ Hey! I got a new iPhone 4s’ and list goes on and on..aaahhhh.. Youth or young Muslims of today who seems to be indulged entirely into this glittery materialistic world.
Because youth is the peak time of one’s life, that is why it is very precious to Allaah Subhana’talaah. Allaah has prepared a shade on the Day of Judgement for those people who used to worship Allah in their youth. On that Day, when there will be no other shade except the shade from the throne of Allaah.
Whenever I think about ‘Youth of Islaam’ I find myself thinking of someone, and I start comparing youth of today with that legendary youth. Someone who lies buried in the blood-wet earth of ‘Uhud, feet covered by scented grass and his body covered only by a square woolen sheet that was not even sufficient to cover him completely.
The most ostentatious young man of the Quray’sh, who left a life full of luxuries to gain the pleasure of Allaah. He was Mus’aab bin ‘Umair who was also known as Mus’aab al Khayr.
His journey to Islaam was not easy. He went one night to the house of Al-Arqam Ibn Al-Arqam,yearning and anxious. There, the Prophetﷺ was meeting his Companions, reciting the Quraan to them and praying with them to Allaah the Most Exalted. Mus’ab had hardly taken his seat and contemplated the verses of the Quraan recited by the Prophet ﷺwhen his heart became the promised heart that night. The pleasure almost flung him from his seat as he was filled with a wild ecstasy. In the twinkling of an eye, the youth who had just become Muslim appeared to have more wisdom than his age and determination that would change the course of time.
Mus’ab’s mother was Khunaas Bint Maalik and people feared her almost to the point of terror because she possessed a strong personality. Mus’ab was satisfied with his faith and avoided the anger of his mother who had knowledge of his embracing Islam. Mus’aab bin Umair left his luxurious life and love ones for the sake of Allaah. Wallaahi this was the level of Emaan…
The Prophet ﷺcommissioned him with the greatest mission of his life, which was to be his envoy to Al-Madinah. His mission was to instruct the Ansar who believed in the Prophet and to call others to Islam, and to prepare Al-Madinah for the day of the great Hijrah. There were among the Companions of the Prophetﷺ at that time who older than Mus’ab and more prominent and nearer to the Prophetﷺ by family relations but the Prophetﷺ chose Mus’ab the Good. Mus’ab was equal to the task and trust which Allah had given him and he was equipped with an excellent mind and noble character. He won the hearts of the Madinites with his piety, uprightness and sincerity. And so they embraced the religion of Allah in flocks. At the time the Prophetﷺ sent him there, only 12 Muslims had pledged allegiance to the Prophetﷺ. During the next pilgrimage season, a few months after that, the Madinite Muslims sent a delegation of 70 believing men and women to Makkah to meet the Prophetﷺ. They came with their teacher and their Prophet’s envoy, Mus’ab Ibn ‘Umair. Mus’ab had proven, by his good sense and excellence, that the Prophetﷺ knew well how to choose his envoys and teachers.
In the battle of Uhud, Mus’ab-bin-Umair held the flag of Islam. When the Muslims on meeting defeat were dispersing in confusion, Mus’ab-bin-Umair held the flag and stood at his post like a rock. An enemy soldier came and cut off his hand with a sword, so that the flag might fall down and proclaim defeat for the Muslims. Mus’ab-bin-Umair at once grabbed the flag in the other hand. The enemy soldier then slashed the other hand. Mus’ab-bin-Umair still stood clinging the flag to his bosom with the help of his bleeding arms. Lastly, an enemy arrow pierced through him, and Musab-bin-Umair fell dead on the battlefield. But as long as he was alive, he did not let the flag go down. Immediately, another Muslim ran and took over the flag.
The great hero, thus fell to the ground reciting the following verse of Quraan
“And Muhammad (peace be upon him) is only a prophet of Allah. Many other Prophets have passed away before him. (Aal-Imraan)
When the battle came to an end the Holy Prophet ﷺ stood by the dead body of Mus‘ab ibn ‘Umair and recited the verse:
“There are some persone among the devoted Muslims (momeneen) who kept ther promise made to Allah.” (Ahzaab)
Then the Holy Prophetﷺ addressed the dead body thus
“When I saw you for the first time in Mecca there was nobody more handsome and well-dressed than you. But, I see that today your hair is uncombed and only a sheet of clothe covers your body!”
At the time of his burial, Mus’ab-bin-Umair had only one sheet to cover his body. This sheet was too short for his size. When it was drawn to cover his head, the feet remained exposed and vice versa. The Holy Prophetﷺ said:
“Cover his head with the sheet, and his feet with the Azkhar’ leaves.”
Such was the end of a youth who was brought up in luxury and comfort. Once an individual develops faith, it makes the individual forget everything else, whether be it wealth, luxury or life itself. Musab-bin-Umair a true youth of Islaam شباب الاسلامیهand one of the great martyrs.

Aisha said, “The Prophet in his fatal illness said, ‘Allah cursed the Jews and the Christians because they took the graves of their Prophets as places for praying.”‘ Aisha added, “Had it not been for that the grave of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) would have been made prominent but I am afraid it might be taken (as a) place for praying.
The scholars have discussed this issue, in the past and more recently, and they refuted those who quote the fact that the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is inside his mosque as evidence that it is permissible to take graves as places of worship, or to include graves in mosques.
Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
There is a specious argument put forward by those who worship graves, namely the fact that the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is in his mosque. The answer to that is that the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) did not bury him in his mosque, rather they buried him in the house of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her). When al-Waleed ibn ‘Abd al-Malik expanded the Mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) at the end of the first century, he incorporated the room into the mosque, but he did wrong thereby, and some of the scholars denounced him for that, but he believed that there was nothing wrong with it for the sake of expanding the mosque.
It is not permissible for a Muslim to take that as evidence that mosques may be built over graves, or that people may be buried inside mosques, because that goes against the saheeh ahaadeeth, and because it is a means that may lead to shirk by associating the occupants of the graves in worship with Allaah. End quote.

Today’s Hadith is very much relevant to Kitaab-ul-Haydh, but my discussion will be a bit off-topic..
Narrated ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Aswad:
(on the authority of his father) ‘Aisha said: “Whenever Allah’s Apostle wanted to fondle anyone of us during her periods (menses), he used to order her to put on an Izar and start fondling her.” ‘Aisha added, “None of you could control his sexual desires as the Prophet could.”
Prophet (SAW) had nine wives at once. He didn’t have to control his desires. Yet, we find that his own wives testify to his amazing hold on himself. It’s a Sunnah that we need to follow. We need to control all sorts of desires, from food to sex. Even when we’re leading a Halal lifestyle, we can’t have everything we want, as much as we want and whenever we want. It’s a great quality to possess: control.
Don’t like what you read? Tell me, what’s the main purpose of the month of Ramadaan? What does being deprived of food, drink and sex teach you? Even though the food you eat is Halal, the stuff you drink is very much Halal as well, and you fulfill your desire with your very own spouse: totally Halal! Why are you then asked to restrain yourself from all these Halal things for a specific time period everyday for a month each year? Simple: to teach you self-control. That 30-day training is enough to last you the whole year. YES! You have to practice it outside Ramadaan as well. :)
As to the question ‘How?‘, it’s very simple.
- Start denying yourself your favorite food, hobby, pastime etc. You don’t have to do it all the time and every time. It could be a punishment you give yourself for not waking up for Fajr on time, for example. Personal experience: I deny myself breakfast (which I can’t live without) if I wake up late for Fajr. So I don’t have that habit Alhamdulillah.
- Voluntary Salah (prayer) and Sawm (fast). A very good way to achieve self-restraint! You’re so caught up in ‘Ibadah (worship), that you don’t really get time to think about other stuff. Or better, you don’t feel right when you think about other stuff. ;)
- Make du’a (invocation). Indeed a very useful tool for a believer. When nothing else works, du’a shows it’s miracles.
- Be firm with yourself. No excuses, no ‘going easy’. Tit for tat. And that’s it!
